It’s (Not) All in Your Head: McK Students Seek Mental Health Treatment

By Caylin Dean, Contributing Writer Depression, anxiety, addiction: just a few of the disorders that many colleges’ students battle in a constant tug-of-war. Academic responsibilities and expectations placed upon us, coupled with separation from home, participation in athletics, relationships and upholding a job can lead us nearly to insanity- that’s when it is important to have someone to turn to. With nearly 2,500 students, the mere four person staff is simply not enough to meet the demands of the ever-overwhelmed college population. An article by the National Institute of Health says that almost 12 percent of college students suffer from some form of anxiety, and seven to nine percent of students experience depression, which, if not properly addressed, can lead to suicide. In fact, a su...

McKendree Hosts a Day of Excellence

By Victoria Sananikone, Assistant Editor  On Thursday, April 25, 2019, McKendree University will be hosting their sixth annual Academic Excellence Day at the Lebanon, IL campus. The event will honor students and their achievements within the classroom. Students will present their creative and scholarly work to the McKendree community. Student work includes presentations, research posters, and performances that they completed for a class that semester. The McKendree speech team will usually take up a slot of time to perform their speeches. These programs can be viewed at the Holman Library, Ames Dining Hall, and the Piper Academic Center. “I really enjoy this celebration; it is an opportunity to showcase what my students have been working on over the past year. It is one thing to work h...

Aquila Theatre – Frankenstein Performance Review

By Loren Terveer Photo Credit: Aquila Theatre, 2018 - Photos by Richard Termine Source: www.aquilatheatre.com Source: https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/frankenstein-published Last month, Aquila Theatre stopped at McKendree as a part of their nation-wide tour. The group performed a special shortened stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the iconic science fiction novel, for local high schools and McKendree students. The event attracted several high school groups who were then able to participate in a short question and answer panel with the cast. Shelley’s iconic tale of a scientist’s creation gone awry has proven itself to be timeless. If you are unfamiliar with Frankenstein, it tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates life on a lab table fro...

Model UN Success

All images from Katherine Gemmingen, Editor Last week, McKendree University had yet another success. McKendree represented Poland at the 59th Midwest Model United Nations conference in St. Louis February 20-23. Senior Andrew Wagner won an Outstanding Delegate Award. Other students attending the conference were Haylee Christ, Aron Durant, Justin Fausz, Taylor Ganz, Katherine Gemmingen, Cameron Nollman, Caden Owens, Rebecca Postula, Hannah Voudrie, and Corben Zanger. Many students may not know what Model UN is since the group is relatively small. Students go to conferences as delegates of a designated country in the United Nations and attempt to represent the country's stances on specific issues. In addition to the St. Louis conference, McKendree's Model UN team travels to Chicago every...

Banned Books Brown Bag

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Featured image from Freedom to Read Foundation A man rents several books from a public library. These books, however, represent an idea that he doesn’t agree with. So, why is he renting them? Well, to burn them on a public forum for all to see. This is an archaic but familiar concept to most that might make you think of the Nazi book burnings and other malicious acts of censorship. This particular event though is not a story from our distant past—this happened just last year in Orange City, Iowa and was streamed on Facebook Live. Burning books has long been a symbol of censorship and oppression by restricting information. In modern times, the practice is seen almost exclusively in movies and, ironically, in history books. This might lead many to assum...

The Story of a Walk On

By Jawaun Jackson, Contributing Writer Photo: Jawaun Jackson For starters, I walked onto a non-NCAA team here at McKendree, so technically I just joined a sport club in terms of bureaucracy. However, I have always seen it as I walked on to a championship winning program. In comparison, McKendree to bowling is the same as University of Alabama to football. I found myself being the weak link of a dynasty destined organization. There was also this chip on my shoulder because I lacked skill compared to my new-found teammates, and it didn’t help that they were some of the best amateur bowlers in the nation. Now, to the comedic part of my story. When applying to this great institution I accidentally put golf instead of bowling as my sport due to a mouse and keypad snafu that I did not notice f...

The Perks of Studying Abroad

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Pictures: Emma Mooneyham For most McKendree students the college experience is within the borders of our relatively small campus in the heart of Lebanon, Illinois. However, this is not the case for all. Some choose to strike out and study abroad. One such traveler is Emma Mooneyham. Emma is a senior here at McKendree University majoring in biopsychlogy. She hails originally from Texas so she is no stranger to travel, but last semester she ventured much further south than her home state. Emma studied abroad and spent almost four months in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she attended Universidad de Belgrano. Her experiences while studying abroad and how she was afforded the opportunity were the big takeaways from this last week's Brown Bag. Emma has a...

Honoring National Veterans Day

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor On Sunday, November 11th, the United States of America stands still for a day to honor all men and women who served in the military for their country. Most of us have someone in our family who has either served as an active member in one of the many wars, or was somehow involved in the military. Once a year on the same day, America unites and pays their respect for those who have served, lost their lives in the war, and dedicated everything they had to their country. McKendree University does the same. Since Thursday of last week we can observe an enormous amount of miniature American flags draping the walkways on our campus. Dr. James Dennis gave the order to lower the flag between the PAC building and Voigt Science Hall to half-mast in order to honor our veter...

Hidden Victors – Forgotten teams of McKendree

By Jackson Jawaun Pictures: McKendree University In the shadow of the mainstream sports at McKendree live some successful programs. Programs that are not too known to the student body. From the outside looking in McKendree sports is much more than Football and Basketball. There is Bass Fishing, Bowling, Swimming, and many others who are all very successful yet unknown to the population of McKendree. These programs do not receive the same exposure as more popular sports, and for some their only platform is the athletic site which is expected but football is exposed to students through mediums of social media and McKendree email. Every person with a @McKendree.edu email receives a message about McKendree football coming almost a week in advance. It is known across campus rather if the team ...

Faculty and Students Visit Cuba and Return With Stories to Share

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Editor’s note:  Most Wednesdays at noon throughout the school year, McKendree hosts a Brown Bag session in PAC 222, during which invited speakers present on a wide range of topics.  Grab your lunch and be sure to try to attend at least one this year; you’re guaranteed to learn something!  Have a class or shift at work during that time?  No worries.  Alec is going to provide us with a synopsis of the presentations!  Check back next week for the next installment.  Whenever the island nation of Cuba is mentioned, most people think of Cuban cigars, Fidel Castro, or the Cuban Missile Crisis. This is not the case, however, for the small group of professors and students that shared their Cuban experience with us at this week’s Brown Bag. Dr. Aurélie Capron  ...
