Months on End: A Wonderful Play Put on by Our Peers

By: Kristina Ferry Photography by Michelle Magnussen Over the weekend, a group of our peers here at McKendree put on a wonderful play that they had been practicing for months. This play was called Months on End, and it was written by Craig Pospisil in 2002. This play covered the lives of eight young individuals over the course of a year and the struggles they face within their relationships, both familial and romantic. Some of the key relationships that the audience watched roll out were: Phoebe and Ben, two fiancees who have some lingering doubt about whether marriage is right for them, and Elaine and Walter, a couple unsure of what their future actions should be as Walter is currently divorcing his wife.  Walter (played by Hunter Tucker) and Elaine (played by Jayden Touchet...

Faterday

Story and pictures by Meredith Geyer, Contributing Writer If Saturdays couldn’t get any better, imagine if they were the one day of the week you could have sugar, carbs, or anything truly delicious. My boyfriend, God bless him, has not only come all the way from Memphis, TN to visit me once a month for the past two and a half years, but also follows a Ketogenic diet during the week. Well, almost every day of the week. On Saturdays I have the honor of partaking in Greg’s epic cheat day, which we have dubbed “Faterday."   Greg’s most recent visit was especially exciting because he had endured an even more vigorous diet with his gym community at home for the entire month of January. Along with a number of strict rules for this new temporary diet, no cheat days were allowed for the entire mont...

A Treasure in Town: Willoughby Heritage Farm

Article and picutres by Jessica Baker, Contributing Writer Tucked away behind Summit Elementary School in Collinsville, IL, Willoughby Heritage Farm is teeming with activity and nature. With over 30 acres of wildlife preservation, the farm features animals, gardens, trails, and scenic overlooks. Driving through the suburban neighborhood, one has no idea that just a couple of turns and one-way streets will lead to a recreated vintage farm. From the beautiful 1940s-style garden established by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners Program and maintained by volunteers, to the goats playing gleefully on the “Billy Goat Gruff Bridge,” to the 1930 Craftman-style farmhouse open to visitors, a day can be made at Willoughby Farms. Adults will enjoy browsing the old barn, viewing ear...

Alton: Hauntings on the River

By Landon Cole, Contributing Writer Pictures and facts provided by Kaylan Schardan, Luke Naliborski, Alton Hauntings, and Visit Alton Gracing many "top ten" lists of America’s most haunted towns is the not-so-scenic Alton, Illinois. If you’re aware of our creepy neighbor’s notoriety, your mind has likely drifted to the Old McPike Mansion – an abandoned and highly-supernatural locale where people can pay to spend the night. However, there are dozens of thoroughly haunted spots in the town beside the mansion. Tour company Alton Hauntings offers bus and walking tours to show small groups around these places late at night. As a non-believer, I tagged along with a small group of friends, hoping to at least learn a bit about the history of Alton. I got more than I bargained for. The first sto...

Sure Shot

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer If you ask a McKendree student what there is to do around town, you might be a bit underwhelmed at the response. There’s Cobblestone; there are the tailgates, but there isn’t much in the way of entertainment without making the haul to O’Fallon or another neighboring city off of highway 64. Now, this isn’t to take anything away from the Leb; we knew it was a small college town when we enrolled here and keeping a campus of college-aged young adults entertained is a task too great for any one city. One establishment has cropped up to help shoulder that burden, Sure Shot IL. Sure Shot is an axe throwing and archery range located just down the road in Mascoutah. If you’re surprised to hear this, that is probably because they opened up in November of 2018, ...

Adventures of Frisbee Golf

By Daniel Kimmer, Contributing Writer Frisbee Golfing is a leisure inexpensive outdoor activity. A little overview about Frisbee Golf (Disc Golf or Frolf; street terms). Most courses are either a 9-hole course or an 18-hole course, depending on the land and space within the public park it was designed and built at. As a beginner to frisbee golf it is played like normal golf, there are T-Boxes and Fairways on each hole, “Greens” are non-existent in frisbee golf, as the basket location is the goal to get the frisbee to and the “hole” are metal chained baskets to catch the frisbee’s as they are thrown into the basket. In order to complete the hole, you have to successfully make the frisbee within the basket, then onto the next hole. The frisbees are designed for each shot and distance; driver...

No Pain, No Gain: Most Common Sports Injuries on Campus

By Madeline Cade, Contributing WriterWhile McKendree University has many great academic programs, we are mostly well-known for our participation in NCAA Division II athletics. Between the 33 teams on campus we hold many GLVC Conference titles and a few National Championships. These trophies do come at a slight cost: the physical and mental well-being of the athletes. Mental wellness aside, athletes are injured a lot of the time. Professor Gabriel Shapiro says, “It sometimes looks like Vietnam around here." You take one look out at campus and you will see walking boots, casts and slings scattered around. It is interesting to do research and find the most common injuries among different sports teams at McKendree. I look at my track and field teammates and see injuries all the time. Since be...

A Discussion on “Good Kids, Bad City” with Kyle Swenson

By Ashley Hathaway, Contributing WriterI walked through the doors of Left Banks Books just shy of 7 p.m. on a chilled Monday evening. There were signs plastered throughout the bookstore with the promotion of sales, new releases and classic literature. I weaved my way through shelf upon shelf until I landed in a room with chairs lined up in a small and intimate fashion. In front of the chairs sat award winning journalist Kyle Swenson. As a journalist for The Washington Post and author of "Good Kids, Bad City," Swenson takes pride in focusing his work in journalism on the criminal justice system in the United States. While people filed in to take their seats in anticipation for the discussion focusing on “Good Kids, Bad City”, Swenson made himself approachable, letting conversations flow eve...

The Politics of Beginning College With a Significant Other

By Victoria Sananikone, Assistant Editor Featured image by Google.com - Meme content by Victoria Sananikone Loneliness is certainly the bane of human existence, which is why the prospect of beginning college with a boyfriend or a girlfriend seems like the best decision you’ve ever thunk. Well, think again. When asked if one believes they should kick off their freshman year of college with a significant other, my opinion on the matter steers towards a definite and dramatically aggressive “NO.” This conclusion was confirmed by personal experience, one that shaped my character and taught me lessons that I wish I had known beforehand. All of our lives are different so I can’t speak for everyone, but I will agree that there are a plethora of pros and cons to beginning college with a love inter...

Bryce Vine – The Ready Room

By Jordan Heberg, Contributing Writer Photo credits: Jordan Heberg On the night of the Bryce Vine concert, the Ready Room was packed with many people ready to listen to the fun music Bryce was about to play. Bryce Vine was giving me Fresh Prince swag at Ready Room. Clocking a constant smirk that said, “I got this,” Vine proved that the humblest move you can make is to believe in yourself. While some may categorize him as a “new artist,” for a decade he hustled and worked on creating “the star” he is today. If someone told me that there are a million hours of concert footage from every great performer in Bryce’s basement, I would say, “Of course.” He understands that it’s not simply about meeting or manipulating your audience’s energy; it is about surpassing it. Nobody in that room was ...
