Faculty Offer Advice for Grad School, Gap Years, and Beyond

By Sophie Jeffery, Editor On Friday, January 26th, faculty members offered a presentation to McKendree students interested in pursuing graduate studies or a gap-year program.   Those involved in the presentation came from a wide background of experience, from Dr. Jennifer Guillén, Associate Professor of Sociology, who completed a gap-year program though Americorp to Dr. CJ Dulaney, Assistant Professor of Computing, who completed his graduate degree while working full-time for Boeing. Also present was Dr. Martha Patterson, Professor of English, who stressed how “important it is to think big” and encouraged students “to think beyond your undergraduate education.” Acknowledging the fears many McKendree students have when contemplating graduate school, Dr. Patterson told those in attendance t...

Call the Fire Department! Mckendree Students Are Cooking Again!

By Emily Davis, Contributing Writer (photo courtesy of creative commons) In the early hours of the morning your pager begins to sound. The pager and the base it is charging on are vibrating violently on your nightstand, and the sequence of tones specific to your fire department come blaring through the speaker. You leap out of bed, run to the garage, throw on your bunker gear (sometimes with the help of your spouse), turn on your blue light, and drive to the firehouse or scene as quickly as possible. While you are driving, a check list begins running through your head as the dispatcher goes over the information for a second time. What trucks will need to be on scene? What equipment will I need for this call? Do I grab a truck, or head straight to the scene? The list goes on and on. When...

Pinktober – Spread the word

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor When most people hear the month “October” they think about things like Fall, Halloween, pumpkin carving, and of course pumpkin spice everything. Very few know about the importance of this month as it relates to a larger issue, an issue that affects one out of eight American women. October is the “International Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. Countries all over the world raise awareness for breast cancer during this month. A few years ago, breast cancer was a topic no one would talk about, it was a taboo. Women had to suffer in silence; often they were not checked out regularly and missed the opportunity to catch discover the cancer and beat it early. Breast cancer awareness month was created to support women who suffer from breast cancer, as well as for the earl...

On Community Service and Into the Streets

By Victoria Sananikone, Staff Writer My initial perspective of east St. Louis mirrored that of everyone else’s: a dangerous zone of crime that was unsafe to visit. After visiting the area for a service project, my perspective was altered, and I now feel that east St. Louis may not be as unapproachable as everyone seems to believe. Our goal within McKendree University is to project a selfless institution that gives back to the community without hesitation. We channeled this notion within my University 101 class as we commuted to east St. Louis. There, we targeted an old church called New Haven to help clean and organize. Immediately we were greeted by members of the church who welcomed us with smiles and laughter, thanking us repeatedly for coming out to help them when we could have been ...

Phi Beta Lambda Makes a Comeback at McKendree

By Emily Stanowski, Staff Writer Much like The McKendree Review, McKendree University's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is becoming more active. PBL has been around for many years at McKendree, but wants to become more involved on and off campus this semester. Last semester, the group hosted a successful 5K, and is holding a trivia night in April to raise funds for members. This past month, the group attended the Winter Seminar Series at SWIC. The Series is held to prepare Southern Illinois’ PBL chapters for success at the State Leadership Conference on April 7-8. The conference gives students a chance to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. Students also have the opportunity to network with important business leaders and fellow students. The conference consists of a se...

The Musical Fusion of Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord: Melding the old with the new to create something unique

By Jack MacLean, Copy Editor Folk music serves as an expression of the people and era from which it originates. For Le Vent Du Nord, a folk band out of Quebec, Canada, delivering that expression to audiences is as exciting as it is daunting. The band, whose name translates literally to “The North Wind,” formed in 2002, when Olivier Demers, the fiddler/foot tapper/guitarist, was studying music in college. After some early mix-ups during its first 5 years, Le Vent landed with its current line-up – Olivier Demers, Rejean Brunet, Nicolas Boulerice, and Simon Beaudry. Today, the four-man band performs around 120 concerts annually, as well as a multitude of music festivals, in both Canada and the United States. “There’s a market for it,” said Réjean Brunet, the band’s resident accordionist, bas...

Panel discussion this Tuesday: The rise of Donald Trump and what it means

The 2016 presidential election has many Americans questioning who they want to represent them to the world. Many question if the two primary candidates can lead their country effectively. Many feel like there are questions that still need to be answered. Luckily, McKendree University can help answer some of those questions. On Oct. 18, everyone on campus and in the surrounding area are welcome to join political science professors Dr. Brian Frederking and Dr. Ann Collins along with journalist/author Sarah Kendzior (The View from Flyover Country, The Globe and Mail, Foreign Policy) for a lively discussion about the current state of U.S. politics, the success of Donald Trump’s campaign and what it could mean for future elections. The panel discussion will be held in the Hettenhausen Center f...

“Stretch yourself” in yoga

BY LAUREN REEVES Staff Writer This Saturday you have the opportunity to experience yoga like you may never have before. All day you, and those close to you, can practice free yoga classes led by McKendree University Professor Adam Tournier and other yoga instructors. However, it is important to know what yoga can mean for you. It means a lot for myself and other students. Originating in India, the practice of yoga has been around for thousands of years. Many yoga practices allow participants to achieve their own personal goals or embark on a physical and sometimes spiritual journey. Because there are so many intensive studies and beliefs on yoga, I will focus on only one ideal for this story: yoga as a meditative means of discovering perception and cognition. It also works as a positive r...
