Coming soon: Voigt Science Hall makeover

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Built in 1965, Voigt Science Hall is trailing behind the growth of the science and technology programs here at McKendree University. Voigt, like most of the buildings on campus, has a history with students for generations, but McKendree administration says it’s time for a makeover. In May of this year, McKendree announced “Forward: The Campaign for McKendree University,” which marked the beginning of a comprehensive capital campaign. The campaign goal was set at $40 million, making the Forward Campaign the most ambitious capital campaign McKendree has ever undertaken, following up the funding and construction of the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. Four years ago, the Board of Trustees made the decision to raise the money for some of McKendree’s biggest goa...

How you know you are not American

BY MAGDALENA KNAPP Contributing Writer If you would have asked me five years ago, “Where do you see yourself in the future?” I would have probably said, “Well, maybe working or studying somewhere near my hometown, where I can visit my family and friends very often.” Now, five years later I am here, in the land of boundless opportunities – America. My house in South Tyrol, Italy, is exactly 8,238.57 km from here, which is about 14 hours by plane, not considering the time change. Not only did I end up on a different continent, but I also entered a new culture and way of living. Since I have been here I noticed in many situations the difference between the American culture and the culture of Italy and Europe. For others considering studying in America, I will try to explain, with the help of...

Weekly sports recap and lineup: Nov. 7 – Nov. 13

BY GRANT RIGGS Staff Writer Weekly sports recap and lineup: Nov. 7 - Nov. 13 Recap of previous week (Oct. 31 - Nov. 6) On a week where McKendree’s overall athletic strength was on display, no star shined brighter than that of sophomore forward Sydnee Carroll and the women’s soccer team. With her game-tying assist and later game-winning goal in overtime, Carroll lead the Bearcats to the GLVC championship over Rockhurst University. This win, which was the first GLVC conference team championship in McKendree history, is extremely important because it sets the precedent for other teams to come. It also gives McKendree an opportunity to have a sports team perform on a national level, where McKendree has been sorely absent since making the jump to Division II. Despite being overshadowed by wo...

Don’t mock the vote Nov. 8

BY LAUREN REEVES Staff Writer On Tuesday, Nov. 1, McKendree’s Phi Kappa Phi honor society invited faculty, staff and students to make their voices heard about the upcoming election. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Piper Academic Center (PAC) lobby everyone had the chance to cast their electronic vote in a mock presidential election. If you decided to participate by casting your vote, you received a cookie of your choosing. Also, to show off your McKendree spirit as you vote you could have snagged a picture with our beloved mascot Bogey!   Phi Kappa Phi President Dr. Rob Van Putte wanted to provide this opportunity for McKendree because he knows it’s important to vote because it’s your civic duty. “We live in a country where we decide who governs us. The only way to do this is to...
