Bryce Vine – The Ready Room

By Jordan Heberg, Contributing Writer Photo credits: Jordan Heberg On the night of the Bryce Vine concert, the Ready Room was packed with many people ready to listen to the fun music Bryce was about to play. Bryce Vine was giving me Fresh Prince swag at Ready Room. Clocking a constant smirk that said, “I got this,” Vine proved that the humblest move you can make is to believe in yourself. While some may categorize him as a “new artist,” for a decade he hustled and worked on creating “the star” he is today. If someone told me that there are a million hours of concert footage from every great performer in Bryce’s basement, I would say, “Of course.” He understands that it’s not simply about meeting or manipulating your audience’s energy; it is about surpassing it. Nobody in that room was ...

Where Have All The Good Clubs Gone?

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Between McKendree’s impressive array of  athletics and its numerous opportunities to get involved in the community, many students’ schedules are nearly bursting at the seams. There are those such as myself, however, who fall into the slim minority of students who do not count themselves among the ranks of a campus team or organization. When I first made landfall on McKendree’s campus, I knew almost no one. I was not involved in a sport, I was not dedicated to a major and I had only three high school classmates here with me—all of whom were quickly finding their footing in their new environments while I plummeted into seclusion. Not knowing where to turn to find allies in my struggle against isolation, I turned to Yammer. For those of you who remember Mc...

Music of the Night

By Rebecca Chicosky, Contributing Writer Photos by Jennifer Moder At around 7 o’clock on a chilly Tuesday evening, Bothwell Chapel filled with the rich sounds of 24 clarinets. On February 19th, McKendree University held its first “Clarinet Night” in which eighth grade through high school students were invited to a masterclass and concert alongside McKendree’s own clarinet section. The ensemble featured E flat, B flat and bass clarinets to an audience of parents, music teachers and overall lovers of the woodwind instrument. I got the amazing opportunity to play B flat clarinet in this ensemble and learn more about helpful and different ways to play the instrument. The night kicked off with a small masterclass given by clarinet instructor Mary Nan Jordan. Mary Nan received degrees in clari...

More Special than their Needs

By Caylin Dean, Contributing Writer As my group and I creep through the door frame, struggling to get through with our full bags of craft supplies- construction paper, markers, scissors, and glue galore- we are greeted with the smiling faces of the residents who have waited so patiently for our arrival. I volunteer at a site that provides care to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Due to limitations at the site, I am prohibited from using any identifying information. Some of the people that we work with have Down’s syndrome, autism, or other forms of impairment. However, they are so much more than their disabilities; they are humans like you or me who long to have love and interaction, participate in meaningful activities, and make friends, which is why it has become such a passi...

WWE or the Bar?

By Andrew Gardewine, Contributing WriterPhotos by google.com, Andrew Gardewine You may be someone who prefers to stay in on weekends. If so, stir things up a bit and go to your local bar; anything could happen. In my experience I’ve found that one of the best ways to entertain yourself is by going out and experiencing the world by meeting new people and seeing new things. There is no shortage of strange, especially when it comes to college bars. For instance, back in December I was at a bar in Champaign, Illinois called Brothers where I witnessed a large shirtless man with a pre-fight bloody nose get bashed in the face by another man with a barstool. It turned into an all-out brawl between 15+ people excluding the bouncers that tried breaking up the fight. You don’t need to spend money o...

Aquila Theatre – Frankenstein Performance Review

By Loren Terveer Photo Credit: Aquila Theatre, 2018 - Photos by Richard Termine Source: www.aquilatheatre.com Source: https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/frankenstein-published Last month, Aquila Theatre stopped at McKendree as a part of their nation-wide tour. The group performed a special shortened stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the iconic science fiction novel, for local high schools and McKendree students. The event attracted several high school groups who were then able to participate in a short question and answer panel with the cast. Shelley’s iconic tale of a scientist’s creation gone awry has proven itself to be timeless. If you are unfamiliar with Frankenstein, it tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates life on a lab table fro...

Intellectual Wellness Can be Fun

By Tiffany Davis, Contributing Writer Did you know that intellectual wellness doesn’t always have to be about learning a new skill, reading a book, or journaling? Working on activities like puzzles, brain teasers, card games and crossword puzzles can also improve your intellectual wellness while enhancing your mood. They can even improve your social skills when you do them with friends. Game play can help to increase the capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding and other mental activities. To close out the week on learning about intellectual wellness, we are going to focus on why it’s good to take a break and play a video game, card or board game, and even work on a puzzle from time to time.  When we think of playing video games, we might think of shutting off our mind and relaxi...

Boost Your Intellectual Wellness Through Food

By Tiffany Davis, Contributing Writer Often times when we think about being healthy and our personal wellness, we relate this back to our diet and exercise routines, or sometimes, lack thereof.  We tend to forget that our intellectual wellness is also influenced by what we eat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when a child goes hungry there are negative impacts on his or her overall academic performances.  A lack of adequate nutrition can essentially affect a person’s ability to focus when taking in new information. It can lead to feelings of restlessness, distraction and even headaches.  These symptoms all impair a person’s ability to perform intellectually.  The nutrients that we get from our food can affect all realms of our personal wellness. Celery is ofte...
