Mission Trip to Poland

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor Photos: Emily Barylske Emily Barylske is a junior from McKendree University. Emily didn’t spend her summer like most students did working in a hometown restaurant for $8 an hour: She went on a mission trip to Poland. What she experienced and how her faith helped to change one person’s life for good are only a few of the experiences she shared with the McKendree community during last week’s Brown Bag. Emily Barylske travelled with a team of volunteers to Poland for two weeks over the summer. Despite being the youngest member on the team, her impact was huge. Over the two weeks Emily was in charge of a group of 7-9 year olds in an Indian village that has been set up by the organization she travelled with and has been growing over the years. Emily’s tribe was cal...

The view of the front lawn from Bothwell Chapel is one that stuns in every season as the trees change. The quad is picturesque, mostly thanks to the meticulous grooming done by the grounds crew. As much as we students may complain about the age of Old Main, there’s something awe-inspiring about th...

The Story of a Walk On

By Jawaun Jackson, Contributing Writer Photo: Jawaun Jackson For starters, I walked onto a non-NCAA team here at McKendree, so technically I just joined a sport club in terms of bureaucracy. However, I have always seen it as I walked on to a championship winning program. In comparison, McKendree to bowling is the same as University of Alabama to football. I found myself being the weak link of a dynasty destined organization. There was also this chip on my shoulder because I lacked skill compared to my new-found teammates, and it didn’t help that they were some of the best amateur bowlers in the nation. Now, to the comedic part of my story. When applying to this great institution I accidentally put golf instead of bowling as my sport due to a mouse and keypad snafu that I did not notice f...

The Perks of Studying Abroad

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Pictures: Emma Mooneyham For most McKendree students the college experience is within the borders of our relatively small campus in the heart of Lebanon, Illinois. However, this is not the case for all. Some choose to strike out and study abroad. One such traveler is Emma Mooneyham. Emma is a senior here at McKendree University majoring in biopsychlogy. She hails originally from Texas so she is no stranger to travel, but last semester she ventured much further south than her home state. Emma studied abroad and spent almost four months in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she attended Universidad de Belgrano. Her experiences while studying abroad and how she was afforded the opportunity were the big takeaways from this last week's Brown Bag. Emma has a...

Getting sick? Not with us!

By Magdalena Knapp, EditorPictures: google.com, mckendree.edu A college student has a stressful life: You rush from one class to the next one, to the library, the computer lab, study groups, study tables, and many other places. The minutes between one class and the following are counted, and you sometimes barely have time to use the bathroom or check your phone, not imagining time to get sick! The campus and dorms are great places to be around for students, but also for bacteria. A dorm room is the perfect environment for all sorts of diseases and infections. To avoid getting sick, we can need all the help we can get. The McKendree Review talked to Lesa Auten, medical assistant from McKendree University and found out some helpful tips for you to stay healthy and kick off this spring semes...

8 Things College Students Can Do to Save The Environment

By Jawaun Jackson Pictures: google.com While we see our world as an okay place to live sometimes, it’s hurting, and man’s actions upon our earth have caused drastic changes to the status quo. In recent centuries we have accelerated the natural changes of the earth’s progression. Scientists have found that the earth naturally will warm up and then freeze over, but this change takes thousands of years to complete. Thanks to us humans, we are cutting the time by hundreds of years with our current ways of living. As a college student it may seem too hard or tasking to live a more “green” lifestyle, but here are eight easy ways college students can help the environment.   1.  Plate Usage It may not sound like much, but if we can use less plates while eating in Ames or even at home we can...

Winter Wonderland Shenanigans

By Victoria Sananikone, Assistant Editor Featured image and last picture by Victoria Sananikone Bearcat image by Lazar Lestaric An excerpt from the McKendree Swimming and Diving GroupMe: Swimmer 1: Like if you want to have a snowball fight *16 people like the message* Swimmer 1: 9:30? Swimmer 3: We should do it in place of our workout tomorrow Swimmer 4: We can have more than one bro Swimmer 3: TRU Swimmer 1: Okay football field at 9:30 tonight *insert snowflake and snowman emojis* It took my roommate and me around ten minutes to don layer after layer of our winter apparel in order to guard ourselves against the severity of the cold. Frozen rain was currently falling from the sky, an endangered element for Lebanon, Illinois; one that h...
