We Told You This Was Melodrama

By Victoria Sananikone, Contributive Writer Screams and cheers from hundreds of people engulfed my ears and prompted my voice to join. The bellowing thud of the bass was a behemoth that vibrated up my legs and into my chest. From the stage, vibrant lights blasted their rays throughout the sea of fans hungry for music and the presence of the artist who concert tickets were so expensive, they sold their soul for them. For a split second I was blinded by the intense lights that suddenly disappeared to reveal a stage masked in smoke. Plainly dressed dancers creeped through the smoke’s embrace, performing an intricate dance of slowly swaying arms and twisting bodies that was mesmerizing to the eye. A familiar melody began to play, triggering the audience to simply go mad with excitement, myself...

The Man Behind the Conducting Baton

Merisa Ashbaugh- Contributing Writer Plato once said, “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” Driven by a love for music and his students, Adam Pulver brings a fresh, upbeat spirit to the McKendree University community and dazzles those he encounters with his gifted abilities. You’ve probably seen him walking around campus dressed to the nines or like a student, or perhaps passed through the lower level hallway of Clark and wondered where the alluring aroma of apple from a Scentsy warmer came from. If you happened to guess the show choir office, you would be correct. Pulver was born in Jacksonville, FL and raised in San Diego, CA until the age of fourteen. For as long as he can remember, Pulver had a passion for music. His mother got him invol...

Poisson D’Avril

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor Yesterday, despite the rain and the sudden snowfall, many of you might have gone on an Easter egg hunt, running all around the house and garden to find the hidden chocolate eggs and Easter bunnies. Some of you might also have used the occasion to prank one of your favorite family members or friends, because yesterday was not only Easter but also April 1st which for many of us means: Ready, Set, Prank! So, where does the tradition of April Fools Day come from? The McK Review team dug into the history books for you and tried to find out! April 1st, also known as “All Fools’ Day” or “April Fools’ Day,” has been celebrated for hundreds of years all over the world. Historians believe that the holiday was ‘born’ in 1582, when France changed from the Julian calendar t...

Changing Perspective

By Nathan Ploense, Contributing Writer Driving through Lebanon on a late fall afternoon usually yields little to no excitement. During summer the brick-laid road can feature fairs, car shows or families heading to Dr. Jazz or the surrounding stores, but a street which usually has vibrant colors and an essence of life becomes grey-washed as winter sets in and the temperatures drop. There is not much to see during these days except maybe a stray cat or someone contemplating donning a jacket to compensate for the wind-chill. With a passing glance while I drove the bland roads one day, a man appeared on a street corner, standing with a full canvas and easel, painting in the transitioning season, morning through the afternoon, wearing a ushanka hat and covered with oil paints. As 2017 wore ...

Being a Student Parent: The Juggling Act

By: Sophie Jeffery, Editor Original art by Benjamin Richter On my drive to McKendree, I'm distracted by both Karen and Georgia from My Favorite Murder talking about Ruth Thalia* and the to-do list that is constantly running through my head, so when the van in front of me comes to a dead stop at the railroad tracks just inside Lebanon, I have to stop short to avoid hitting it. Something tumbles forward from between my kids’ captain's chairs in the middle of the van.  “Please don’t be a lunchbox, please don’t be a lunchbox,” I whisper to myself. At the stop sign, I take a quick peek and there it is: my son Beckett’s blue lunchbox settled upside-down behind the center console. Crap. I flip around in the McDonald’s parking lot and head all the way back to Mascoutah, mentally attempti...

For the Love of the Game

By Kaylee Fann “What distinguishes a great player is his presence. When he goes on to the court, his presence dominates the atmosphere” – Bill Russell Charismatic. Outgoing. Loving. Talented. Inspiring. Resilient. These are all words that can be used to describe 19 year old Winslow Martin, a basketball player for Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Illinois. Born and raised by a single mother in Centralia, Illinois, Martin fell in love with the game of basketball from a young age. His older brother and grandfather served as positive role models for a young Martin, teaching him everything he knows about the game. Once he started playing, he practiced with his brother nearly every day. His grandfather was actually a professional player overseas until an injury abruptly ended h...

How to Properly Turn Down a Second Date

By Zachary Breeding, Editor So, it happened. You went on that date with that one person who had the guts to ask you out for Valentine’s Day (likely inspired by our previous articles). Maybe it was not a complete disaster, or maybe it was.  Whichever category your date falls in, we at the Review are here to teach you how to turn down a second date without resorting to “ghosting” the other person. For those not in the know, “ghosting” is when one person stops replying to all forms of communication from someone who they would like to discontinue a relationship with. First and foremost, it is important to note that ghosting and its slightly subtler counterpart “fading” are very hurtful things to do to a person, especially one who had the guts to ask you out on a date. But enough lecture; let...
