Brotherhood of McKendree Discusses Professionalism

By Kyle Boldin, Contributing Writer Wednesday, Sept. 26, the Brotherhood of McKendree (BMCK) dressed to the nines as they hosted their first ever business forum event in the lecture hall of PAC 222. Brought together by the BMCK president, Edward Hill II, in conjunction with McKendree Career Services, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the forum discussed professional development topics ranging from resume and cover letter builders, how to dress for interviews, mock interview practice and professional etiquette. When asked about his inspiration for the event, Hill noted that the majority of his fellow college students often find themselves “in the hot seat, and feel nervous” when entering the professional world. Krysten Baker: Coach and Counselor

By Kenneth Spisak Krysten Baker goes by multiple names: Krysten, Coach Baker, Ms. Baker, KB. Depending how you are acquainted with her, one of these will be how you address her. Baker is on the coaching staff for McKendree’s track and field team as the throwers coach. Not only is coaching essentially a full-time gig, she also has her daily job of a high school guidance counselor for Columbia High School. Often times I wonder how coaches got into their beloved sport from the get-go, and after kindly agreeing to an interview, Baker answered that very question. “I technically got involved in track and field in 5th grade," Baker said. "We had a small team at my elementary school where we had modified versions of regulation track events. It was in 6th grade when I actually joined my junior hig...

Speech Team Showcases their expertise

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer Editor's note:  Most Wednesdays at noon throughout the school year, McKendree hosts a Brown Bag session in PAC 222, during which invited speakers present on a wide range of topics.  Grab your lunch and be sure to try to attend at least one this year; you're guaranteed to learn something!  Have a class or shift at work during that time?  No worries.  Alec is going to provide us with a synopsis of the presentations!  Check back next week for the next installment.   This week’s Brown Bag was more emotionally charged than most. From witch hunts to the question:  “Am I gay enough?”, there were tears, laughter, and then more tears. McKendree’s speech team was showcased in this week’s Brown Bag. The Brown Bag was MC’d by junior team member Isa Scatturo.  She ...

Why is it so hard to move off campus?

By Zachary Breeding, Contributing writer Learning to live on your own is what college is all about, right? Becoming a capable adult that can take care of themselves and act autonomously is what our society has taught us to expect from the college experience. This is even found on the McKendree website wherein the goals of the Res Life program are listed as:  “To extend the college educational experience for students and to create a residential community. Residence hall staff work with students toward making the residence halls an attractive place to live in order to facilitate student growth and development. Each hall develops its own sense of identity and community spirit which becomes an integral part of the overall campus living environment.” This is used to justify the policy ...
