Alton: Hauntings on the River

By Landon Cole, Contributing Writer Pictures and facts provided by Kaylan Schardan, Luke Naliborski, Alton Hauntings, and Visit Alton Gracing many "top ten" lists of America’s most haunted towns is the not-so-scenic Alton, Illinois. If you’re aware of our creepy neighbor’s notoriety, your mind has likely drifted to the Old McPike Mansion – an abandoned and highly-supernatural locale where people can pay to spend the night. However, there are dozens of thoroughly haunted spots in the town beside the mansion. Tour company Alton Hauntings offers bus and walking tours to show small groups around these places late at night. As a non-believer, I tagged along with a small group of friends, hoping to at least learn a bit about the history of Alton. I got more than I bargained for. The first sto...

Fields of Faith

By Madeline Cade, Contributing Writer Photo credits: featured image- Eddie Sutton, first photo- Madeline Cade, second photo- Ashlynn Grant Hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), McKendree University’s first-ever Fields of Faith took place on Oct. 17, 2019. The students of FCA led around 100 people through a night of worship and prayer. This was the product of weeks of planning. So many things had to be prepared in order for the night to go smoothly: a speaker and a band had to be booked, students had to feel ready to give their testimonies, the field had to be available, the gym had to be ready in case we needed a backup space or place for bad weather, and there had to be plenty of advertising to make sure there was strong attendance. The planning stage was a long process ...

It prides itself on being the "leading zoo in animal management, research, conservation, and education." Hygge: Everything Peaceful

By Christopher Fernandez, Contributing Writer Images: google.com There is a feeling of comfort that comes from the simplest things in life. Sometimes this is sitting with your roommates with ambient noise in the background while you all work on different assignments, while at other times this is the peace that comes from cozying up in a comfortable chair with a good book, a cup of coffee, and nobody else around. No matter where you find this peace, one thing is guaranteed: you are experiencing Hygge. Paul Worrell, the Reference and Instruction Librarian at McKendree University, gave a Brown Bag presentation on Hygge.  In his presentation, he showcased several different actions that he thought displayed the feelings of Hygge and let audience members interact with the group to share thin...

Sure Shot

By Alec Deyong, Contributing Writer If you ask a McKendree student what there is to do around town, you might be a bit underwhelmed at the response. There’s Cobblestone; there are the tailgates, but there isn’t much in the way of entertainment without making the haul to O’Fallon or another neighboring city off of highway 64. Now, this isn’t to take anything away from the Leb; we knew it was a small college town when we enrolled here and keeping a campus of college-aged young adults entertained is a task too great for any one city. One establishment has cropped up to help shoulder that burden, Sure Shot IL. Sure Shot is an axe throwing and archery range located just down the road in Mascoutah. If you’re surprised to hear this, that is probably because they opened up in November of 2018, ...

Back on Track

By Madeline Cade, Contributing Writer Pictures from mckbearcats.com Early in the summer of 2019, McKendree announced that they would be searching for a new Head Men and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Coach. While it was slightly unexpected, the team was ready for a new challenge and experience. After a nation-wide search and over 100 considered applicants, Agne Eggerth was selected as McKendree’s new head coach. Before coaching, Eggerth began her career as an amazing sprint athlete. She attended McKendree as a student and was a part of one of the most influential women’s teams the school has ever had. That team collected five NAIA national championships. Four of those five were consecutive from 1999-2002. This indoor team was inducted into the McKendree Sports Hall of Fame in ...

Mirrored Human Intention: The Art of Life

By Christopher Fernandez, Contributing Writer There are many wonderful, beautiful, and tragic things that can be seen in life.  The truest expression of life is something that will always be sought out by individuals, but for some, that siren’s call is in the world of art. Art, while a wide-ranging discipline, can be boiled down to certain areas including musical arts, sculpting, and painting. On October 9th, Susan Bryant gave a Brown Bag presentation to showcase her art and what inspired the galleries she spoke about. Bryant, a retired art professor and photographer from the Austin Peay University, was invited to McKendree University to give a Brown Bag speech, returning after five years.  She discussed a series that she was going to be unveiling on October 10th at the gallery in Lebanon...

Mental Illness vs. The Greatest Villain

By Victoria Sananikone, Editor Photos found by the courtesy of Google *Contains no spoilers* The most impactful movies are the ones that make you feel some type of way, that prompt you to think, that leave you unable to collect your thoughts until a few hours later. Todd Phillips has delivered to us a film that does just that. Dark, gritty, and filled to the brim with the essentials of a masterpiece, Joker is a film that will go down in cinematic history along with the riveting performance by Joaquin Phoenix whose skills are up to par with that of Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning Joker. If I had to describe Joker in one word, it would be “unsettling.” Joaquin Phoenix portrays a mentally ill Arthur Fleck in a manner that sends a chill down your spine. With his hollow eyes, greasy hair and p...

Be Careful, Passion is Contagious

By Mallory Raber, Contributing Writer I had the privilege of interviewing a bubbly, self-driven, and inspiring McKendree alumna known across campus as Dr. Sara Trask, PhD. Anyone who has taken a class with Dr. Trask can agree that she is all-in when it comes to teaching her students how to improve their communication. All of her course content is geared to prepare students for success in their personal and professional life. As an inspired student who wishes to spread light and positively impact as many people as Dr. Trask has, I cannot help but to wonder, why? Why is she so passionate? Without hesitation, Dr. Trask credited two of her previous professors at McKendree, Dr. Gordon and Dr. Haskins. “Both individuals could be anywhere and still be talking about what was being taught in their...
