Instant Ramen: Turning basic into boujee

Article and pictures by Jawaun Jackson, Contributing WriterBrief history time, ramen pronounced (Rah-Men, not ray-men) is a Japanese dish with the translation of "pulled noodles." It consists of Chinese wheat noodles served in a meat or (occasionally) fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso. Essentially it is a Japanese presentation of Chinese noodles. The origins of ramen are a bit muggy, but the most plausible story is that Chinese immigrants from the 19th and 20th century brought the noodles with them in Yokohama Chinatown. According to the record of the Yokohama Ramen Museum, ramen originated in China and made its way over to Japan in 1859. Early versions were wheat noodles in broth topped with Chinese-style roast pork. The Instant noodles we all know and either love o...

Apartment Living or Living Space?

Article and pictures by Annika Beal, Contributing Writer According to the McKendree website, West apartments are “Apartment style residential areas with each apartment consisting of two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a full kitchen, and living and dining spaces.” All of these apartments are co-ed and are about half-mile away from campus. They come with an outdoor swimming pool and a club house with washing facilities and a main lounge. The apartments are supposed to have these basics, but I want to see what McKendree students have to say about them. I interviewed three fellows who all lived in different apartment buildings: Hope Gramly, 1201, Erin Stroberg, 1219, and Alissa Zeitelhack, 1207. Let’s talk about the similarities and differences in opinion about the apartments. The first person I...

Cleveland-Heath

Article and picutres by Jawaun Jackson, Contributing Writer An Edwardsville favorite located on North Main Street - with a blink of an eye you may miss it. The front of the eatery is modest compared to the back that is much livelier with the outdoor seating. Inside it is warm and cozy; the décor has resemblance to grandma’s house with modern undertones. No matter the season the décor remains in a state of late summer early autumn. The décor may look like gramgram’s but the food is not! A very sophisticated array of choices lies upon the ever-changing menu, all including the freshest ingredients possible, so fresh that if it is not available local during a certain season the menu/recipe will be altered. I took on a complete three course dinner and was not disappointed. Founded by culinar...

The Man Involved in Everything, but in Charge of Nothing

By Alexis Wesling, Contributing Writer If you are a McKendree student, chances are you have been to an event on the quad, the front lawn, the Hett, and more. There are usually tents involved, tables and chairs set up, and sometimes a projector. However, do you ever wonder who sets up the events or tears them down? Who is in charge of making these elaborate events come to life? You might have heard of a man named Shawn Connelly: the operations coordinator on campus. Not many people see him if they don’t know him - but once they know him, they realize he is everywhere. If students don’t know Shawn they are missing out on knowing one of the most interesting people at McKendree University, but let us back up for a minute because in order to understand how this man came to be, we have to dive i...

Ready, Set, Swing!

By Jessica Baker, Contributing Writer It’s a beautiful Sunday on October 13th at the Sunset Hills Athletic Complex in South County. Four fields have games, crowds are cheering, and in the distance a faint beeping can be heard from each field. A batter steps up to the plate on field three with assistance from the pitcher. The batter requires assistance due to wearing a blindfold, along with almost every player on the field. This isn’t a crazy drinking game; this is Beepball. Beepball is a modified baseball game for the visually impaired. MindsEye, a nonprofit for the blind located in the Metro East area, hosts two local Beepball tournaments a year.  The National Beep Baseball Association has been in place since 1976 and currently has 37 official teams across the United States. They also ha...

Lebanon’s Best Cup of Coffee

Article and pictures by Quinn Polaski, Contributing Writer If you've never noticed, our small town of Lebanon has its own small cafe. The Foundry is a cafe and market situated off the red brick roads of St. Louis Street. I interviewed the owner of the Foundry, Stephanie, to find out more about Lebanon’s best cup of coffee. Stephanie bought the lot from a previous cafe owner in the summer of 2016. It was been a staple business on the broadway of Lebanon since. The Foundry has its own flair. When first walking in the store, you see the various bean grinders and latte machines behind the counter. Along the walls are trinkets such as comedic kitchen ware, chapstick holders, and art prints. My first impression of this place was that it would be the best study area for any coffee-loving McKendr...
