GLVC Shakeup – What This Means for McKendree

By Dylan Powell, Head Sports Writer Photos collected by Dylan Powell It is 12 p.m. on a cold Wednesday, February 23. Typically, students would be in the classroom studying for their upcoming exams prior to the midterm break. However, Lindenwood University had a different plan in mind; a public press release was being held in the gym for a big reveal. The band program, faculty and many other students arrived, curious of what the school had in store for the conference. Finally, the curtain dropped and the screens turned on: Lindenwood announced that as of July 1, 2022, the university athletic programs will be joining the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), a NCAA Division I conference who also added former Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) participant Southern Indiana just weeks ago afte...

Career Services: Here for More than Just Seniors

By Kenneth Glidden, Head Culture Writer Career Services, located in Clark 103, has a multitude of services available. To most students, it seems like something one would start to visit in junior or senior year when the concept of starting your career after college begins to sink in. After having a wonderful conversation with the director of Career Services, Jennifer Pickerell, I am here to tell you about all they have to offer and how, even as a freshman, you can gain great resources and knowledge by visiting Career Services. Image provided by Jennifer Pickerell When asked to give a brief rundown of what Career Services offered, Jennifer dove right in with a service they offer to Bearcats that haven’t even started their classes yet. She stated, “They can take our online career as...

The Best Fair Around!

By Chloe Gamber, Head Academic Writer On February 16, McKendree held their Career Fair at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. You can find various employers that attended on the following page: https://www.mckendree.edu/news/career-fair-2022.php  A direct quote from the page explains the importance of the Career Fair for students. “Students who aren’t sure what they want to pursue after graduation can also benefit because they can learn more about what companies seek in candidates,” says Jennifer Pickerell, Director of Career Services. “Additionally, students who are still exploring ideas can become more comfortable in speaking with employers before they start looking for an internship or full-time position.”  The career fair gives many opportunities for networking along...

McKendree Softball – Prepared for Anything

By Dylan Powell, Head Sports Writer Photo collected by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer Three hour practices, fall games, scrimmages and sessions strictly focusing on fundamentalism: this is what drove the McKendree softball team this offseason. The Bearcats, who went 26-13 in the regular season and 20-8 in conference play just a year ago underwent many changes over the summer and fall of 2021. In June, Heather Tarter and staff took over the softball program in what was considered a reload year after the loss of several seniors. The team brought in new faces, from transfer upperclassmen to a solid freshman class with one goal in mind: carry the torch that was passed on to them.  “Having a new coaching staff gives everyone a clean slate. All of us were trying to prove ...

What Makes McKendree Great?

By: Kenneth Glidden, Head Culture Writer Photos taken by Sadie Miyler, Photographer and Designer Last week I touched on some things the student and faculty body believed were missing from our beloved McKendree University. Those students and professors I interviewed were able to come up with some amazingly creative ideas for facilities, services and classes they would love to see. After asking them what was missing, I asked them what makes McKendree great and this is what they had to say. Freshman swimmer, Caitlyn, mentioned the free parking. Free parking is something not seen at very many universities, but it is more than a blessing here at McKendree. Instead of having to pay for a pass that can only allow you to park in some areas, all you have to do is visit Public Safety, get...

Studying Abroad Will Change Your Mind!

By Chloe Gamber, Head Academic Writer Images collected/provided by Sadie Miyler (Photographer and Designer), Dr. Dye and Zane Phillips Dr. Dye explains that “Symmetry is fascinating to the human eye, which is why it is in so much architecture.” This involves the psychological need for order which draws us to symmetry. Frieze patterns are one example of an art form that is symmetrically pleasing. Dr. Dye has a personal interest in decorative frieze patterns. The image below is one of their recent dyeing  pattern projects. Dr. Dye truly enjoys the creative concepts that can be developed through these designs, and emphasizes how the “Canvas can alter the way a person looks at the patterns.” This information alone is a lot of knowledge that can help us understand why traveling ...

Rugby: McKendree’s Latest Sport

By Dylan Powell, Head Sports Writer Photos taken by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer In February of 2020, McKendree University introduced rugby as the next addition to the University’s athletic department. Since then, the program has endured a lot, from an inaugural season filled with COVID-19 concerns to coaching changes. Despite these circumstances, the players have stood strong and continued to persevere, with the men going 8-4-1 in the spring of 2021 including a 6-win streak to end their season. The women’s team went on a similar streak, going 5-0 on their season. Now, these athletes are looking to make a similar, if not better run in 2022.  This week, I had the pleasure to speak with members of the program about their goals and visions for the men’s and women...

What is McKendree Missing?

By Kenneth Glidden, Head Culture Writer Photos taken by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer McKendree University has been around for nearly 200 years, and for a university to thrive for this long it has to be doing a lot right. With that being said, nothing is perfect and always being on the lookout for ways to improve is how good things become great things. After interviewing upperclassmen, lowerclassmen and professors, there have been some amazing ideas gathered about what McKendree might want to look into implementing for its future students. After interviewing two seniors and two freshmen here at McKendree, there are a few things they believe McKendree is missing. The first question asked was, “In terms of academics, what is Mckendree missing?” Freshman Caitlyn menti...

A Few Tips on Success in the Classroom

By Chloe Gamber, Head Academics Writer Photo collected by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer When it comes to success in the classroom you can always search for quick tips online - however, this does not always mean they are the best tips for everyone's needs. Everyone has their own unique methods of studying and participating in the classroom.  Great practice for every student involves creating a routine. According to teachbetter.com, “Foundation of systems and routines can allow for greater student freedom in the classroom.” This is not only required from the student, but also the professor. A good professor describes how possible it is to thrive in the classroom - this plays into the ability to cooperate. Understanding the viewpoint of a professor is a great way...
