Attention all McKendree students, faculty and staff!
Today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Diversity Carnival will be held in the quad (between the bookstore and Ames dining hall). You might be asking: What exactly is a diversity carnival? Resident Director and Diversity Carnival organizer Craig Tompkins has that exact answer for you.
“The event is an effort to promote the understanding and celebration of our differences with the goal of creating a more accepting, safe, and educated community,” Tompkins explains. “This will be accomplished through having conversations and playing games that promote looking at issues through others’ perspectives as well as pondering your own identities.”
If you cannot make it to the event, Tompkins recommends the following resources to learn more about diversity: Black Lives Matter, The Safe Zone, The Human Rights Campaign and Community Change. Reading up on relevant issues is a great way to stay informed and learn more about what you can do to help regarding diversity and human rights.
Tompkins elaborates, “I’d encourage anyone reading this article to reach out to faculty and/or staff like myself to continue any conversations that were started at the carnival. Many of my colleagues and I are dedicated to fighting for justice and would love to assist any student in their personal growth.”
The dedication put towards this event is inspiring and the Diversity Carnival is sure to teach you something new. Come and learn about diversity in the quad!
