Lifelong Learning Exploration Day

By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Photography by Madison Bonner, Elana Melzer and Madison Rohn On election day, McKendree hosted its first Lifelong Learning Exploration Day to academically empower students. Instead of classes, students were encouraged to attend various sessions with faculty, staff and other students to grow their knowledge. President Dobbins inspired the event, which was based on his belief in the importance of impactful education. Students learn about affordable ways to study abroad. Photo by Madison Bonner. Abraham Lincoln and McKendree

By Dr. Brian Frederking, Class of 1990 Title photo of Abraham Lincoln from Common American Journal McKendree University will be 200 years old in 2028. One amazing part of its illustrious and resilient history is the many interactions between early McKendree figures and the great Abraham Lincoln. The cause of abolitionism symbiotically forged the trajectories of the young Methodist college and the future United States president. In ways large and small, McKendreans were part of Lincoln’s life – as religious inspirations, political opponents, biographers, wartime emissaries, coworkers, bodyguards and confidantes to the American hero. The relationship between McKendree and Lincoln began in 1832 when Lincoln was a 23-year-old store clerk and rail splitter who ran for the state legisl...

Sitting Down with a SAM

By Elana Melzer, Head Producer of McK RadioTitle photo submitted by MaryAnn Romagna While walking across campus, you have likely seen the flyers about the SAMs, or Student Academic Mentors. But what do the SAMs do, and why should students take advantage of their services? I sat down with one of the SAMs, MaryAnn Romagna, to answer these questions and more! What are the SAMs? The SAMs are one of the many free services available for students at McKendree. As MaryAnn said, “SAMs are Student Academic Mentors, and we are part of ResLife. We hold hours once a week in the ALC [Academic Learning Center] from 6 to 10 p.m., and students can come and ask us for help with homework during that time.” What do the SAMs specialize in? MaryAnn specializes in math and science, but there are ...

McKendree’s faculty and students formally welcomed the new students at the convocation ceremony on August 27th and led them onto the grounds with the soulful bagpipe. The ceremony concluded with students partaking in one of McKendree’s oldest traditions, the signing of the matricula. The students' names joined the countless other alumni and current students that are forever remembered on the pages of the matricula in the university’s archives.  The Class of 2028 signed the matricula. Are These Criminals Insane!

By Popular Delusions, a blog by Honors Intro to Psychology studentsAre These Criminals Insane! | Popular Delusions (wordpress.com) Have you ever watched the court show Judge Judy, or perhaps CSI or Law and Order? These shows are inspired by real-life crimes, but they have a Hollywood twist to create an entertaining story. One commonality between reality court shows is the exaggerated use of the insanity defense. Humans are naturally more likely to remember the successful instances of using the insanity defense rather than the unsuccessful attempts. This has led to the American belief that a large proportion of criminals successfully use the insanity defense, although that is not the case. First, let’s make sure we all understand exactly what the insanity defense is.  In some cases, ...
