Who’s Up for an Adventure?
Who’s Up for an Adventure?
By Chris Streetman
Have you ever wished that time travel or teleportation would become realities during your lifetime? Well, they are. Every library has thousands of portals to different places and different times, more commonly known as books. Before you stop reading, I have another secret to share with you: it is okay to love books, and you are not alone. There is a group on campus dedicated to the love of literature called the Literary Interest Society (LIS). You may have seen the baskets of books auctioned off last month, or perhaps you saw Dr. Zanelotti being pied in the face last spring.
All of these activities come from our love for books and help us raise funds for our Shakespeare trip. Every spring, LIS embarks on an adventure to see Shakespeare’s w...

Bearcats Cross Country Wrap Up Seasons, Sending One to NCAA Nationals
Bearcats Cross Country Wrap Up Seasons, Sending One to NCAA Nationals
By: Megan Doty
The McKendree Bearcats Men's and Women's Cross Country team began their post-season on Saturday, October 26, at the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) meet hosted by Maryville University at Forest Park in St. Louis, MO.
The women's team placed 9th out of 14 teams in the Conference. Senior Megan Doty was the first individual to bring home All-Conference honors for the women's cross country team in McKendree history. The top 15 athletes were named All-Conference, and Doty placed eighth in the field, covering the 6-kilometer course in 22:22.
"I think my finish at Conference is a testament of how well Coach Mendez has done," said Doty. "Last year at Conference I was 76th, and this year I was 8th and ra...

Marching Band: It is More than a Sport
Marching Band: It is More than a Sport
An Opinion written by: Emily Lucia
With the recent online popularity of the Ohio State Marching Band, the art form has intrigued many. Commenters on the YouTube videos have shown amazement at how a group of people can form such interesting pictures on the field while playing instruments. Though, for marching band members throughout the country, it is just another day on the field. Because of everything band members do during half-time, many spectators wonder whether marching band is a sport.
Band directors, members and their parents alike will say “yes,” while most athletes will beg to differ. Organizations like the NCAA and most universities consider marching band a sport, as they offer athletic scholarships to band members. However, if you look at t...

A New Director; A New Concert Band
A New Director; A New Concert Band
Katie Herath
Saying “goodbye” to a beloved director is difficult, as our music department has learned this past year. The end of last semester marked the end of Dr. Phil Wilhelm’s time at McKendree University. Instrumentalists began wondering what was to come of concert band and, though wary at first, they welcomed Dr. Jennifer Moder into the music program.
Born and raised in Peoria, IL, Dr. Moder started playing violin in kindergarten, switching to trombone in 5th grade. In 2001, she earned her Bachelor of Music Education with honors from the University of Illinois. Dr. Moder earned her Master of Music Education from Illinois State University in 2010. In 2013, Dr. Moder earned an Interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education and Curriculum &a...

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11

People who barely know me do not know I have a twin sister. She and I are like two peas in a pod—inseparable. Although we go to different colleges, it does not take away from the time we have shared with one another in the past. She is my best friend and will always be despite our constant bickering.
I had often wondered what my life would be like if I was not born a twin. Since last weekend, however, I would not want anything different. S...

Thor: The Dark World ~ Movie Review
Thor: A Dark World
A review written by Emily Lucia
*Warning: Minor Spoilers Ahead*
Marvel’s second post-Avengers film is just what a Marvel film should be. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry (sometimes in the same scene) and it leaves clues to future Marvel productions (Avengers 2 and 3 anyone?). Despite the change of director from the first film, Thor: The Dark World is an exciting ride that keeps audience members on their feet until the very end.
The film begins in the same manner as the first with Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Thor’s father and King of Asgard, lending his voice to tell an ancient tale of an evil race called the Dark Elves led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). In the tale, Malekith seeks a dark substance known as the Aether. Asgardians led by Odin’s father and prede...
