McKendree University: The Fashion Forward Campaign

By Emily Stanowski, Staff Writer Lebanon, Ill. - Fashion icon and designer Marc Jacobs once said, "To me, clothing is a form of self-expression. There are hints about who you are in what you wear."  Personally, I have always believed this to be true.  What you choose to wear is a great way to represent what you believe in, as well as other aspects of your life, such as your favorite bands, sports teams and places. Because of this, I have always enjoyed keeping up with trends in the fashion world.  While visiting McKendree University's archives, I discovered several pieces of McKendree clothing that were stored in many different boxes.  Immediately, I thought about my Visual Rhetoric project, and how exciting it would be to include McK clothing of the past in my project.  After all, colleg...

One Disney Fan’s Perspective on the Live Action Beauty and the Beast

By Allison Donofrio, Staff Writer For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of Disney. When I was an infant, I cuddled with my Disney Babies blanket and a plush of Simba from The Lion King, which was given as a baby shower gift from my mom’s friend. I grew up watching Disney VHS tapes over and over. It was a coincidence that The Lion King was my favorite, along with Enchanted, Tangled, Meet the Robinson's and Beauty and the Beast. Growing up, Belle was my favorite Disney princess. She seemed confident, intelligent, and kind – everything I wanted to be when I grew up. I met her several times during trips to Walt Disney World, but met the Beast only once. I remember seeing the Beauty and the Beast stage show at MGM (now known as Hollywood Studios) several times. I loved the storyline...

Al Alone: Issues Three & Four

By Benjamin Richter, Cartoonist/Contributing Writer   Issue Three It is weird being human. There are so many opportunities and ways to connect. We can convey so many emotions and articulate exactly how we feel. Why don't we do this to help each other? Why is understanding not a priority? Sometimes the world is cruel. At least there are puppies. Issue Four Education. Is it about how much we learn, or how much we don't learn? Support me and see more! Instagram: @brichstudios – Facebook: B-RICHstudios. Hidden Figures: A Film with History, Science and Female Empowerment

By Paxton Cohoon, Contributing Writer The film Hidden Figures was released on December 25, 2016 and has grossed $2.9 million from only 25 different locations since then. The weekend of its release, the film made $1 million more than estimated and beat out Rogue One by .8 million. Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, the film sold 20.5 million tickets in North American theaters. However, its success did not stop there. This film has been nominated for 63 awards and has won 26, one of which being the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture. What makes this historical comedy-drama so popular is the inside scoops on how three African American female mathematicians helped one man orbit earth in the 1960s. These women were Katherine G. J...

Al Alone: Introduction & Issue One

By Benjamin Richter, Cartoonist/Contributing Writer Series Intro Earth looks very different from 250 million miles away. Growing up near Mars, Al never imagined traveling far from home.  In an exploration of a surrounding galaxy, Al's spaceship collides with a satellite and sends his ship spiraling towards our planet.  In this new world, Al attempts to make the best of the situation.  Watch all of his experiences among human society unfold in Al Alone by B-RICHstudios. Al Alone is a series of comics that will be used to show the good, the bad, and everything in between.  I want the emotions to be real and the humor to be funny.  Growth and societal critique are two ideas I plan to utilize as the strip continues.  I truly hope that readers enjoy and want more of this series.  Al Alone is ...

Feel the music

BY LAUREN REEVES Staff Writer Music has been around since the age of man and continues to inspire everyone who comes into contact with it. You can listen to music anytime and anywhere, but if you are from the St. Louis metropolitan area or just in the area for a short time, consider checking out some local concert venues because you may never know which music artist is in town. Cheers to 187 Years

BY Sarah Goetze                                                                                                                                       Staff Writer Many times students criticize McKendree University falling short on feeling like a college campus, however, during this past weekend, McKendree did anything but disappoint. Homecoming weekend had campus exploding with energy as it was filled with students, alumni, family and friends. Although many activities and competitions, such as Bearcat Games and Chalk the Walk, started Monday for registered student organizations, Friday night started the fun for the remainder of campus. The Campus Activities Board (CAB) held a headphone dance on campus. During this time, students danced together while individually listening to music throu...
