McKendree adds water polo as 34th sport

BY ALEXIS PORTER Contributing Writer As part of a University-wide initiative to attract a more diverse student population, the McKendree University Athletic Department has added two new teams for the 2016-17 season. This year a variety of new bearcats will compete for the men and women’s water polo team. Water polo is a team water sport. The game consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into their opponent's goal, with the team with the most goals at the end of the game winning the match. McKendree’s sandwich artist, with a side of happiness

BY AUSTIN LAGESSE Contributing Writer Most students know her simply as “the sandwich lady.” Others know her by her name, Stephani Stark. One thing is for sure: you are guaranteed to see her Monday through Friday at the deli station in Ames from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Being part of the Ames Dining Hall cooking staff for five years now, Stephani’s deli area has become her second home. “I want to make every kid feel like that is a place where they can come and be comfortable,” said Stark. The length of her lines during the rush hour lunch is a testament to her superior sandwich skills. A quickly extending line is no problem for the sandwich lady, who knows over 50 different sandwiches by heart. Students are constantly reminded about how much money is needed for college. Luckily, there is one money reminder that all students should be aware of that could help them relax about money for college. This helpful reminder is that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadlines have changed. Starting with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students are now able to submit the application earlier. This new modification to the application can change the way students budget for college. By having this change, students can relax a little more and not stress over money. Make or break: Why this Saturday’s game is a must-win for McKendree football

BY GRANT RIGGS Staff Writer In football, a “trap game” is generally described as a game against an opponent that is thought to pose little challenge. As a result of playing in a trap game, the team that is widely favored to win tends to “shoo off” the opponent. Typically, the favored team will overlook the so-called “lesser team” because of that team's record, and, as a result, the favored team often slips up and loses. The main flaw with this, is that a team's record is often not indicative of how good that team actually is. New organization is ready to take off

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer McKendree junior Jack MacLean is starting a new student organization, “Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations," or SCNO. MacLean wanted a student organization dedicated to building experience and résumés for students, freshman through senior. BY JOE BLASDEL Adviser of the speech and debate team In the last two weekends, the McKendree University Speech and Debate team took home 18 awards, including two team sweepstakes awards at the Missouri’s state tournament. “This team has worked hard throughout the year, and our late season success is a testament to that work,” said Joe Blasdel. “This team has both the ability and discipline to put together some excellent nationals performances.” 15 colleges and universities, including Rice University, the University of Missouri and Purdue University, attended Loyola University’s National Warmup on Feb. 12-14. Ash Wednesday: remembrance and repentance

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Last Wednesday, Feb. 10, dozens of McKendree students, faculty and staff came together to celebrate Ash Wednesday, the 40 days of preparation before Easter. Opening the season of Lent, Ash Wednesday became a symbolic day on which early Christians remembered the 40 days leading to Christ’s resurrection on Easter. Traditionally, worshipers observe Lent with fasting, study of the Scriptures, self-examination, confession and prayer, according to Reverend Tim Harrison, who lead the Ash Wednesday service at Bothwell Chapel. At the commencement of this period of remembrance, all are called to reflect on their own mortality and repent of their sins in the light of the salvation purchased by Christ. (more…)
