Honoring National Veterans Day

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor On Sunday, November 11th, the United States of America stands still for a day to honor all men and women who served in the military for their country. Most of us have someone in our family who has either served as an active member in one of the many wars, or was somehow involved in the military. Once a year on the same day, America unites and pays their respect for those who have served, lost their lives in the war, and dedicated everything they had to their country. McKendree University does the same. Since Thursday of last week we can observe an enormous amount of miniature American flags draping the walkways on our campus. By Nathan Ploense, Contributing Writer A year at McKendree cannot go by where Residence Life holds its famed Sex in the Dark program. While usually aimed at freshman, it offers the opportunity for students to ask sex and gender questions, in a judgment free area, and receive general answers back. Though proven to be a popular program on campus, many students feel that it has started to run its course and become stale. Not even the offer of free food is necessarily enough to get people out of their room or break from their busy schedules to participate. From the outside looking in McKendree sports is much more than Football and Basketball. There is Bass Fishing, Bowling, Swimming, and many others who are all very successful yet unknown to the population of McKendree. Angela Craven – An Insight Into Human Behavior

By Alec Deyong “What makes him do the things he does?” This is a question that many ask about Kanye West, but for Board Certified Behavior Analyst Angela Craven, it is actually her job. Figuring out what causes behaviors and how to modify them is the focus of her career as a behavior analyst and was the focus of her Brown Bag. Craven defined behavior as “everything we think, say and do.” If this seems like an awfully large field to cover, that is because it is. She explained that a behavior never comes “out of the blue.” There is always a reason, a cause. Her job is identifying an environmental cause for a specific behavior and developing a plan to change it. McK Speech and Debate Team in top form

The McKendree University Speech and Debate Team turned in excellent performances last weekend at its home debate tournament and the University of Central Missouri’s speech tournament. The highlights include: Mitch Deleel and Adeja Powell won both the Bearcat Classic and the Hunsaker Invitational. That’s three consecutive tournament wins and extends their unbeaten streak to 24 consecutive debates. They are also qualified for the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE) and are currently ranked 3rd in the nation by the NPTE. Lyndellia Mannie, Aliyah Smith, and Andrew Wagner each qualified for the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament. McKendree Speech and Debate Team Starts the Season Strong

The McKendree University Speech and Debate Team took home 24 awards, including 10 1st place finishes, over its two most recent tournaments at the University of Minnesota and Southwest Baptist University. “This was an impressive start to the season,” said Joe Blasdel. “While this marks a successful start to the season, the team displayed a very high level of camaraderie at both tournaments – especially important with 10 new members this year.” McKendree was one of three universities, including the University of Missouri and the host school, to attend the Minnesota Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota on September 21-22. To honor this day and raise awareness about voting among students, McKendree University has been promoting voting more than ever before. Come to the Holman library on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate the National Voting Day and get your own pocket-copy of the Constitution! Over the past week tables were placed outside of Ames dining hall where students could register to vote. The All In committee at McKendree University who takes care of this important issue is composed of 15 students and faculty members. When Maya Angelou Came to McKendree, and What Became of Our Gift to Her

By Greg Kassen, Contributing Writer On Feb. 4, 2003, Dr. Maya Angelou, a St. Louis native, spoke as the keynote speaker at McKendree’s Founder’s Day celebration honoring 175 years of operation. At this time McKendree was not yet a university. Angelou, who is arguably the most influential literary voice to speak at the college, drew in a packed crowd of 2,600 listeners in the Statham Center. Dr. John Greenfield, a retired professor who taught for 33 years at McKendree, attended that day. He recalls: “It was in the big gym and was totally packed. She was very moving and powerful when she related how she had the strength to persevere in the face of many obstacles --abuse, poverty, racism. Where you can feel the sun's rays on your face, hear the birds sing, and feel the warm air coming through your slightly opened window? Well, I do not. I usually wake up when the birds are still sleeping, the sun is still hidden behind the endless cornfields and the outside temperatures are around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. My alarm clock starts yelling at me every morning at 5 and I crawl out of bed with my eyes barely open, take my backpack, and walk with the rest of my team to the cars. A Night of Networking and Celebration

Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association’s official honor society. The honor society represents what Aristotle described in Rhetoric as three ingredients of persuasion: logos (Lambda), meaning logic; pathos (Pi), relating to emotion; and ethos (Eta), defined as character credibility and ethics.
