McKendree Speech and Debate Team Starts the Season Strong

The McKendree University Speech and Debate Team took home 24 awards, including 10 1st place finishes, over its two most recent tournaments at the University of Minnesota and Southwest Baptist University. “This was an impressive start to the season,” said Joe Blasdel. “While this marks a successful start to the season, the team displayed a very high level of camaraderie at both tournaments – especially important with 10 new members this year.” McKendree was one of three universities, including the University of Missouri and the host school, to attend the Minnesota Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota on September 21-22. Representing McKendree were senior Adeja Powell; junior Haylee Christ; sophomores Mitch Deleel, Chandler Flesch, Caden Owens, and Rebecca Postula; and first-year...

Remembering Dr. Betsy Gordon

In lieu of our previously scheduled article, the editors of the McKendree Review would like to offer up this space to remember our beloved Dr. Betsy Gordon. An avid supporter of Bearcat athletics and the arts, Dr. Gordon taught speech communication at McKendree University for twenty-seven years, enriching the lives of countless students with her positive outlook and unforgettable southern charm. While there truly are no words to express how much she will be missed, we hope those of us who knew her can come together and love and support eachother a little more in her memory.  Feel free to share your favorite memory of this amazing woman in the comments. There will be a memorial service for Dr. Gordon today at noon in Bothwell Chapel for all who are able to attend. Rest in peace,...

We are ALL IN for voting!

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor Tuesday, September 25th, is National Voting Day. To honor this day and raise awareness about voting among students, McKendree University has been promoting voting more than ever before. Come to the Holman library on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate the National Voting Day and get your own pocket-copy of the Constitution! Over the past week tables were placed outside of Ames dining hall where students could register to vote. The All In committee at McKendree University who takes care of this important issue is composed of 15 students and faculty members.  They try to get as many students registered as possible and help them through what is probably their first voting experience this November. Voting seems to be more important now than ever before. After the 20...

Poisson D’Avril

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor Yesterday, despite the rain and the sudden snowfall, many of you might have gone on an Easter egg hunt, running all around the house and garden to find the hidden chocolate eggs and Easter bunnies. Some of you might also have used the occasion to prank one of your favorite family members or friends, because yesterday was not only Easter but also April 1st which for many of us means: Ready, Set, Prank! So, where does the tradition of April Fools Day come from? The McK Review team dug into the history books for you and tried to find out! April 1st, also known as “All Fools’ Day” or “April Fools’ Day,” has been celebrated for hundreds of years all over the world. Historians believe that the holiday was ‘born’ in 1582, when France changed from the Julian calendar t...

Dr. Mario Livio – The man that gives curiosity a face

By Magdalena Knapp, Editor “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.” (Kate Chopin - "Story of an Hour") - You can hardly introduce a short story with a better sentence than this, in my opinion. This sentence makes you curious, wants you to continue reading and to discover more about Mrs. Mallard, the death of her husband and how she is going to live with it. Curiosity - this has been Dr. Mario Livio’s field of interest for the last five years. Dr. Livio shook my hand with the heartwarming words “La vita è dura” (Italian for “Life is hard”) and introduced himself to me before his big speech. “I’m not actually Italian,” he says, “but people think it because of my name, so I mi...
