At McKendree University, many students come from many different countries and backgrounds and view different issues in different lights. Even though international students cannot vote in elections, their voices and opinions on the issues that our nation faces are important and can affect their home countries as well. By Kenneth Spisak Mike Bost is from Murphysboro, Illinois and has represented Illinois as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, on behalf of the 115th district from 1995-2015. Now, Bost is a representative for Illinois’ 12th congressional district after emerging victorious in the 2014. To honor this day and raise awareness about voting among students, McKendree University has been promoting voting more than ever before. Come to the Holman library on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate the National Voting Day and get your own pocket-copy of the Constitution! Over the past week tables were placed outside of Ames dining hall where students could register to vote. The All In committee at McKendree University who takes care of this important issue is composed of 15 students and faculty members. By Sophie Jeffery, Contributing Writer The New York Times reports a drop in international student enrollment during the current academic year (2017-18). According to a recent survey released by the Institute of International Education, fewer international students have enrolled in U.S. colleges for the first academic semester following President Trump’s inauguration last January. The institute reached out to almost 500 campuses all across the country, with 45 percent reporting lower international enrollment. The head of research for the institute, Rajika Bhandari, told the Times the reason for lower enrollment is probably “a mix of factors. BY NATALIE VAN BOOVEN Staff Writer The University of Missouri Board of Curators has authorized changes to the UM system’s Title IX procedures. On Oct. 2, UM curators met in Kansas City, Mo. and approved changes presented by Pres. Tim Wolfe. The most prominent of these changes is an investigation period of 60 days; others include changes as to how students and student organizations can file complaints. Initially, the executive order sent in April. by Wolfe on this issue compelled all UM employees to report Title IX violations—the actual term is mandated reporter—but exemptions were soon made for employees with legal requirements or privileges of confidentiality, such as counselors and lawyers.
