The Sad State of West WiFi

By Zach Breeding, Editor in Chief For those of you in the world looking to truly unplug from the online world, our editorial team has done the research and come up with the ideal location to accomplish this. And the best, or at least most convenient aspect of this location is that many of my readers may already in fact live here! That’s right, it's Mckendree West which we have determined as the number one location to escape from those pesky WiFi signals that plague modern life so. On the topic of WiFi, late last spring semester all students received an email regarding a decision the university had made to discontinue the cable service on campus in order to be able to provide better internet access and keep up with all of the streaming and such that occurs on campus. This email was met wit...

By Allison Donofrio, Staff Writer As the McKendree class of 2017 graduates and sets their eyes on future goals, I set out to discover what some of the students have planned for their future, what motivated them throughout their time as a student and what they would change during their time at McKendree. The majors represented by the interviewed students included Psychology, Religious Studies, Speech Communication, Biopsychology, Business Administration, Pre-Professional Biology, Economics and Finance, Philosophy, and Health and Wellness. Spotlight on Art: Hubris

By Benjamin Richter, Cartoonist/Contributing Writer Lebanon, Ill. - Hubris is an exhibition of work by McKendree art faculty members Kevin Kao and Amy MacLennan. The show recently had an open reception on March 23 and is available to view until April 2. This show is a rare treat, as it is the first show collaboration between veteran art faculty member Amy MacLennan and new art faculty member Kevin Kao. Hubris is defined as excessive pride or self-confidence. With its earliest use being in Greece during the late 1800’s, hubris was noted as excessive pride or defiance of the gods, leading to nemesis. MacLennan, primarily a painter, and Kao, dominantly a ceramicist, tackled this concept through various pieces- both collaboratively and separately. I reached out to the artists to gather the...

A Crash Course in Flirting Through Different Cultures

By Magdalena Knapp, Contributing Writer Many of you have heard of pick-up lines such as “Do you know how much a polar bear weighs? – Enough to break the ice! Hi, how are you?” Pick-up lines are a common way of flirting or starting a conversation. The language of love is spoken by everyone all over the world; however, is there a flirting “standard” that works in every country of the world? According to many movies, like Titanic and every Nicholas Sparks movie ever, one deep look in a girls’ eyes is enough to win her over. However, this is not what typical flirting is like in the real world. When a guy goes out and talks to a girl, it rarely goes as smooth as seen in movies. Some flirts end with a glass of water in the boy’s face. Others end with a fake phone number given. Many of my femal...

Phi Beta Lambda Makes a Comeback at McKendree

By Emily Stanowski, Staff Writer Much like The McKendree Review, McKendree University's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is becoming more active. PBL has been around for many years at McKendree, but wants to become more involved on and off campus this semester. Last semester, the group hosted a successful 5K, and is holding a trivia night in April to raise funds for members. This past month, the group attended the Winter Seminar Series at SWIC. The Series is held to prepare Southern Illinois’ PBL chapters for success at the State Leadership Conference on April 7-8. The conference gives students a chance to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. Students also have the opportunity to network with important business leaders and fellow students. The conference consists of a se...

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

By Paxton Cohoon, Contributing Writer Living with roommates is never easy. These roommates can end up being great friends or the bane of existence. Regardless if roommates are great friends, fights are still bound to occur. Common arguments involve what temperature to set the thermostat at, cleaning or lack of cleaning habits, and monopolizing the bathroom. How you approach these arguments is key when dealing with roommates. Here at McKendree University, roommates are to try to resolve their problems amongst themselves. If that does not work, they are to inform their Resident Assistant (RA). If that still does not work, they can also inform the Resident Director (RD). McKenna Scaturro, senior at McKendree, resolves her roommate conflicts by discussing them with her roommates in a friendly...
