McKendree Students React to The Trump Presidency

By Allison Donofrio, Contributing Writer Since becoming the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump has been making headlines. I created a survey to discuss how McKendree University students feel about President Donald Trump on a scale from very negative to very positive. The survey asked a series of questions regarding President Trump’s policies from his first few weeks in office, including his executive orders on the Dakota Access and Keystone Oil Pipelines, rolling provisions on the Affordable Care Act, ordering organizations that provide abortion services motionless, building the wall and his travel restrictions. Lastly, it asks for any additional comments about President Trump. 22 students from various areas of study were randomly selected to discuss their opinions on the P...

Coming soon: Renovation of Holman Library

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Recently, we have explored one of McKendree’s plans for the Forward Campaign: the renovation of Voigt Science Hall. Now let’s turn our attention to another objective: the renovation of Holman Library. When it opened in 1969, Holman Library was a great addition to McKendree’s campus that students still enjoy today. However, in the age of technology, modern libraries are employing library space to encourage collaboration, community and technology use. “[Libraries have] gone from very book-centric to very technology-centric,” says Senior Vice President Victoria Dowling. Paula Martin, Director of Holman Library, says that having a technologically-equipped library “helps us to be able to evolve for whatever technological changes happen in the future. It’s impossib...

Coming soon: Voigt Science Hall makeover

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Built in 1965, Voigt Science Hall is trailing behind the growth of the science and technology programs here at McKendree University. Voigt, like most of the buildings on campus, has a history with students for generations, but McKendree administration says it’s time for a makeover. In May of this year, McKendree announced “Forward: The Campaign for McKendree University,” which marked the beginning of a comprehensive capital campaign. The campaign goal was set at $40 million, making the Forward Campaign the most ambitious capital campaign McKendree has ever undertaken, following up the funding and construction of the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. Four years ago, the Board of Trustees made the decision to raise the money for some of McKendree’s biggest goa...

Weekly sports recap and lineup: Nov. 7 – Nov. 13

BY GRANT RIGGS Staff Writer Weekly sports recap and lineup: Nov. 7 - Nov. 13 Recap of previous week (Oct. 31 - Nov. 6) On a week where McKendree’s overall athletic strength was on display, no star shined brighter than that of sophomore forward Sydnee Carroll and the women’s soccer team. With her game-tying assist and later game-winning goal in overtime, Carroll lead the Bearcats to the GLVC championship over Rockhurst University. This win, which was the first GLVC conference team championship in McKendree history, is extremely important because it sets the precedent for other teams to come. It also gives McKendree an opportunity to have a sports team perform on a national level, where McKendree has been sorely absent since making the jump to Division II. Despite being overshadowed by wo...

Don’t mock the vote Nov. 8

BY LAUREN REEVES Staff Writer On Tuesday, Nov. 1, McKendree’s Phi Kappa Phi honor society invited faculty, staff and students to make their voices heard about the upcoming election. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Piper Academic Center (PAC) lobby everyone had the chance to cast their electronic vote in a mock presidential election. If you decided to participate by casting your vote, you received a cookie of your choosing. Also, to show off your McKendree spirit as you vote you could have snagged a picture with our beloved mascot Bogey!   Phi Kappa Phi President Dr. Rob Van Putte wanted to provide this opportunity for McKendree because he knows it’s important to vote because it’s your civic duty. “We live in a country where we decide who governs us. The only way to do this is to...
