No Pain, No Gain: Most Common Sports Injuries on Campus

By Madeline Cade, Contributing WriterWhile McKendree University has many great academic programs, we are mostly well-known for our participation in NCAA Division II athletics. Between the 33 teams on campus we hold many GLVC Conference titles and a few National Championships. These trophies do come at a slight cost: the physical and mental well-being of the athletes. Mental wellness aside, athletes are injured a lot of the time. Professor Gabriel Shapiro says, “It sometimes looks like Vietnam around here." You take one look out at campus and you will see walking boots, casts and slings scattered around. It is interesting to do research and find the most common injuries among different sports teams at McKendree. I look at my track and field teammates and see injuries all the time. Since be...

By Victoria Sananikone, Assistant Editor  On Thursday, April 25, 2019, McKendree University will be hosting their sixth annual Academic Excellence Day at the Lebanon, IL campus. The event will honor students and their achievements within the classroom. Students will present their creative and scholarly work to the McKendree community. Student work includes presentations, research posters, and performances that they completed for a class that semester. The McKendree speech team will usually take up a slot of time to perform their speeches. These programs can be viewed at the Holman Library, Ames Dining Hall, and the Piper Academic Center. “I really enjoy this celebration; it is an opportunity to showcase what my students have been working on over the past year. It is one thing to work h...

Model UN Success

All images from Katherine Gemmingen, Editor Last week, McKendree University had yet another success. McKendree represented Poland at the 59th Midwest Model United Nations conference in St. Louis February 20-23. Senior Andrew Wagner won an Outstanding Delegate Award. Other students attending the conference were Haylee Christ, Aron Durant, Justin Fausz, Taylor Ganz, Katherine Gemmingen, Cameron Nollman, Caden Owens, Rebecca Postula, Hannah Voudrie, and Corben Zanger. Many students may not know what Model UN is since the group is relatively small. Students go to conferences as delegates of a designated country in the United Nations and attempt to represent the country's stances on specific issues. In addition to the St. Louis conference, McKendree's Model UN team travels to Chicago every...

What is Intellectual Wellness?

By Tiffany Davis, Contributing Writer Pictures: google.com While we are in college we are oftentimes so focused on studying and earning good grades that we forget about our intellectual wellness. When discussing intellectual wellness, we often mistake it for learning or the amount of knowledge we have accrued in our current life, but it is so much more than that.  Intellectual wellness includes our ability to learn and grow from experiences while utilizing various intellectual capabilities.  It encourages personal creativity while also focusing on stimulating mental activities.  In order for people to be considered intellectually well, they must be capable of using resources available to them to expand their knowledge and improve their skills along with expanding their potential to share ...

Transferable Skills – From the Field to the Stage

By Loren Terveer, Contributing Writer McKendree University is becoming known for their wide variety of sporting teams. Water polo, track and field, lacrosse, bowling and bass fishing are just a few examples of the teams that the university offers to students. Being on any of these teams is a large time commitment. Athletes are often spread entirely too thin between demanding practices and required coursework. While they somehow find the time to practice and keep up with their studies, they can also be found somewhere else: the stage. Michelle Magnussen, the McKendree Theatre Department head, often says that some of her best student actors have also been athletes. Throughout her time at McKendree she has seen hundreds of students. The student athletes have multiple skills obtained from the...

Tips for Tackling the Stigma of Mental Illness

By Rebecca Chicosky, Contributing Writer Photos by Rebecca Chicosky Films like “Split,” a 2016 horror film centered around a man with dissociative identity disorder (DID), shock and horrify theater-goers with the Hollywood-glamorized terror of mental illness. Whenever mass shootings occur Facebook and news articles flood with comments and beg very similar questions: Who was the shooter? Why did they do it? What mental illness do they have? Media misconceptions and stigma regarding mental illness, particularly DID and schizophrenia, can often lead individuals to spiral down a path riddled in stereotypes. Although colleges try to prepare students in psychology, influences from outside sources bleed into educated minds. How can those informed about the reality of mental illness tackle stigm...

Join the Green Side, Learn About Recycling on Campus / Make McKendree Green

By Ashley Hathaway, Contributing Writer As a student of McKendree, I have always cherished the faculty and staff that encourage students to be involved highly in academics, sports, and the variety of clubs on campus. While students are constantly encouraged to be involved and often see promotion of different athletic events and club meetings across campus, I cannot recall an instance where I have been encouraged to recycle or compost while on campus. While there happens to be an occasional recycling bin throughout the classrooms and a single compost bin near the garden behind the student success center, recycling and composting seems to be lacking around McKendree. Even when recycling bins are present, it seems as if our community is lackadaisical in their efforts to recycle their waste. A...

Marriage Meets College

By Kyle Boldin, Contributing Writer Doves flying free, rice scattered across the courtyard, and the inevitable “I do’s” representing love and lifelong unity: this signifies a beautiful union between two or more people who genuinely treasure each other and decide to spend their lives together. As universities continue to diversify, married college students have become an ever-growing factor, and McKendree is no different. Amongst the McKendree community thrives a small percentage of students, both traditional and non-traditional alike, not only achieving bachelors but also saying “I do.” While the majority of marriages in college often occur between non-traditional students, traditional students have tied the knot as well. According to senior Kelsey Schultz, “I knew I wanted to marry my hu...
