Rocky Horror ‘Rona Show

By Haley Rey, Head Copyeditor Photos by Haley Rey, Matt Halloran, and EllenTrinity Hear the wedding bells! Toss your rice into the air! You’ve been rightfully sacrificed to the almighty lips, and it’s time for the Rocky Horror Picture Show! ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!! During a time like this, it’s difficult to find ways to feel normal and human. Going shopping, playing sports, popping a tire and being drawn into a castle that contains aliens and transvestite scientists—these are all great options for anyone looking to feel like the pandemic hasn’t taken everything away. While I don’t know if it actually qualifies as normal, I think the best way I’ve taken back my life during COVID-19 was attending a midnight showing of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”  The show was held ...

The Lack of Concern

Written by an anonymous student Feature photo by McKendree University Disclaimer: This anonymous student loves McKendree and its faculty and staff, but students deserve to have a voice during this pandemic. McKendree University has become a hot spot. Not just with Covid-19 cases, but also with stress. For most students, classes started in person on August 17. While talking to other students, they expressed how fearful and uncertain they all were. Part of this fearfulness is due to the students having to sanitize their own desks before and after they use them. In all honesty, only a small number of students actually do this. So, this plan is not doing shit. Also, on most days the trash cans around the dorms and Ames are overflowing with garbage, attracting bugs and other wildlife...

The Editors of Your favorite Newspaper

Editor in Chief: Victoria Sananikone Hey there! My name is Victoria Sananikone and I am a senior on the McKendree Women's Swim and Dive team. I am majoring in Professional Writing and Rhetoric with two minors in Journalism and Public Relations. I have been writing for the McKendree Review since I was a freshman and I have loved every second of it. I am excited to announce that I will be your Editor in Chief this year! In my free time, you'll likely find me hanging with my homies, listening to weird music, or engrossed in a novel. Writing also consumes much of my time, which has helped me to grow into the writer I am today. I have always had a passion for writing and storytelling. I hope to continue doing both of these things in my future endeavors after I graduate. Writing about ...

Purple Politics: A Third Choice

By I.S., contributing writer Photos from Google Reader, I must express my gratitude to you for clicking on such a dreary title— and a political one at that. But, let me establish now, that this politics column will be unlike any other you have read (or have been forced to read in your general education political science class). I aim mostly for entertainment, but I will also attempt to provide an engrossing form of colloquial—sometimes satirical—education in the world of politics and government. Politics aren’t scary or hard to maneuver through, they aren’t only for a certain type of person to be involved in—despite what some may suggest. They are a piece of our lives that, whether you like it or not, affects every single thing that you do and every single aspect of who you are....

Let’s Talk

By anonymous contributing writer Photos from Google, Getty Images “All lives matter.” You’ll hear that from people who feel that the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement somehow discredits other groups of people. These people would likely believe that the message of BLM is “we matter more” or “only we matter” when that could not be further from the truth, a truth most people just ignore. BLM has made it clear several times that their movement is about justice for the black lives lost at the hands of the police, a justice that is almost never rightfully served. But “All Lives Matter” isn’t the only argument you’ll hear against the BLM movement. No, there are plenty others that can easily be discredited. Enjoy. “What about Black-on-Black crime? You don’t care then!” If you ho...

McKendree, Let’s Stand Together

By Victoria Sananikone, editor in chief Photos from Getty Images and students My desire to speak out against racism and the urgency to address injustice had been plaguing my conscience. This is a problem that is bigger than I will ever be, and for that I choose to stand with the oppressed whose skin color alienates them from the equality they deserve. McKendree University is a melting pot of races with a significant amount of African American students. During this time, it is imperative that we start a conversation about Black Lives Matter, and we must extend a hand to our fellow black students. See them, hear them, stand with them. Yesterday, I learned about the massacre of Black Wall Street. Black Wall Street is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood District, and it was one of...

From Two Graduating Editors: Farewell, McKendree Review

Featured image from McKendree University Magdalena Knapp, Editor in Chief Never in my life would I have imagined that one day I would be the editor for a school newspaper. I have always loved writing and the way it makes me feel. By writing, you can share your emotions and thoughts with the world, whether it is something important, something funny, or something sad. Writing never judges you for anything, but through writing you can judge everything. My first journalism class in college was "Writing for the News Media." It was a small class and I thought our teacher, who soon became sort of my mentor, Mr. Shapiro, was a funny guy. He always had a joke ready, whether it was a joke about students, something that happened to him that day, or a very very dark humor joke (I really enjoyed those...

Shameless Plug for Shameless Grounds

Kae Edgcomb, Contributing Writer Featured image from Yelp In addition to being one of the greatest puns of all time, Shameless Grounds is a unique coffee shop. Calling them a coffee shop, however, does them no justice. Their claim to fame is being outside the “box” in nearly every way. It does not matter what box you try to categorize them into; they will find a way to defy it and in the best ways possible. They have some of the best coffee in St. Louis, but they also have a liquor license to serve you local beer and hand-crafted cocktails! Do not forget to check out their bakery items. There is the beloved gooey butter cake and other sweet treats. Maybe you want to have a full meal with your coffee. Not a problem! Order one of their vegan options or a delicious sandwich, which will also ...

RIP PWR

Katherine Gemmingen, Head Copyeditor Images from Katherine Gemmingen In 2017, when I started at McKendree University, the PWR program had two full-time professors; now, there is just one part-time professor. Each year that I’ve attended McKendree has seen the program’s staff dwindle as the program fades away. To this I say, RIP PWR. For those of you who have never heard of PWR or perhaps have heard of it but are unaware of what it means, PWR stands for Professional Writing and Rhetoric, which is one of the programs offered here at McKendree as both a major and a minor. According to McKendree’s 2017/2018 Undergraduate Catalog, “the mission of this program is to develop students as rhetorical thinkers and effective professional writers in print and digital environments.” Listed under the ...

It sure feels like it—I mean, it’s been an excruciatingly long time for being locked away from normal life. In fact, it honestly feels like I’m stuck inside in a single, inexorable day of h-e-double-hockey-sticks, almost like those movies "Groundhog Day" or "Happy Death Day." Life in quarantine has become the same day, over and over again and it’s getting quite boring. My days have ...
