Why Vinyl?

By Greg Kassen, Contributive WriterI remember hearing once from some source of knowledge I deem credible that technological advancement is not marked with the creation of new technologies, rather, it is when the new, innovative technologies of the past decade can be produced cheaply enough for the working class to own that milestones can be achieved. This holds true for many facets of society. One can buy a new laptop for $200, a new smartphone for $150, and then a new Blu-ray player for $50. These all, at one point within the last twenty years, were called great advancements in their fields. Music appears to follow the trend as well. Digital albums can be bought as cheaply as a few dollars, and brand-new CDs of popular artists come out as low as $10. Yet, with examples such as the Blu-ray...

The Best Kind of Party? A Star Party. A beginners guide to finding constellations, spotting planets, and learning moon phases while at McKendree.

By Gabrielle Madewell, Contributive Writer One magical thing McKendree has to offer, outside of its great wifi and very organized housing arrangements, is something that does not even factor into tuition: the night sky. While you may just think of stars as a silent backdrop to your everyday life, there is a lot more to learn about them besides just being bright dots scattered across the sky. Stars are bright, luminous bodies of energy that are so large and bright that we can see them down here on earth with just the naked eye. Constellations are groups of stars, forming imaginary lines and creating representations of images, including animals and mythical gods, goddesses and creatures.   Living near a city is drastically different from living in a generally rural town. There is one hu...

The Pros and Cons of “13 Reasons Why”

By Allison Donofrio, Staff Writer Most things in life have their pros and cons, and when pop culture tries to shed light on difficult subjects, it usually comes with both good and bad reactions. While the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" has become increasingly popular, it has brought potential problems, as well as potential for educating the public. Cons "13 Reasons Why" glamorizes suicide by showing that killing oneself and leaving tape recordings is the only way to successfully show the world a message. Viewers see main character Hannah Baker as a strong person, only to see her commit suicide on screen. Instead of discussing her problems with her parents, Hannah takes her own life. The series attempts to simplify suicide, which, in reality, is a very complex issue. Suicide is not a ...

Dangers of the digital age: protect yourself against identity theft

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Approximately 15 million Americans become victims of identity theft each year, according to statistics gathered by Identity Theft and Scam Prevention Services. Additionally, 100 million people’s personal information is put at risk. Identity theft costs these millions of people a total of $15 billion in losses each year. In 2014, Insurance Information Institute found that every two seconds another person became a victim of identity fraud. What’s even more disconcerting is that, according to Financial Times Press (FTP), college students are five times more likely to have their identity stolen. (more…)

McKendree “Bern-cats”

BY LOGYN NORRIS Contributing Writer On the early morning of March 5, SIU Edwardsville became a hotspot for the Democratic public with the arrival of presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. The Vadalabene Center on SIUE’s campus, which normally holds 5,000 visitors, was invaded with thousands of guests. The enormous crowd was allowed into the building at 8 a.m. and anticipated Sanders’ speech, which started at 10:30. I arrived there at 6:30 a.m., and even then the line was already beginning to wrap around the building. Some camped out, others got there in the wee hours of the morning and many gladly waited in the very back of the line in order to experience this event. (more…)

“Gotta catch ‘em all!”: the Pokemon series celebrates its 20th anniversary

BY CORY McCORMICK Staff Writer "Gotta catch 'em all!" I remember the first time I ever heard that infamous catchphrase. The year was 1999, which was a few years after the first Pokemon games were released in Japan. I was six years old, and I was eating my usual breakfast: Eggo waffles. It was Saturday morning, so I was also watching cartoons. Suddenly this new cartoon that I had never seen before started playing. The narrator was describing a world very different from ours, a world filled with these animal-like creatures known as Pokemon, who could be captured and trained to battle!  The minute that the theme song started, and I heard that “gotta catch ‘em all” at the end, I was hooked. McKendree’s wild things

BY LOGYN NORRIS Staff Writer For most of us, coming to McKendree is our first taste of freedom.  We stay out late, we drink, we skip class and we make some financial mistakes.  Whether it is spending too much money on a beer run, an expensive new shirt or eating McDonalds at 3 a.m. for five nights straight, we have all done it.  However, some McKendree residents are using their money and new found freedom for other items: animals. Textbook Takeover

For some college students, they have decided to skip this experience and just go without books. Why do some students do this, you ask? Because the prices for the books are outrageous. (more…)

McKendree Role Models: A look inside

BY LAUREN REEVES Staff Writer Captain. Resident Assistant. Coordinator. Peer Mentor. Those are just a few leadership positions that McKendree students have the honor of holding. These elect few walk around campus and shine in these roles. But, what is it really like to be a student leader here at good ole McK? According to sophomore Matthew Roberts, “It’s a lot of fun. And it’s enjoyable. You get to help those younger than you and those who are older than you strive for greatness. It feels nice to have people look up to you.” Roberts is one of the drum majors in the Marching Band, a choral captain in the Show Choir, and the student director of first year Student Ambassadors. With all of those activities, he really knows how to stay organized. “It’s enough to keep you busy. I have thoug...
