Studying Abroad Will Change Your Mind!

By Chloe Gamber, Head Academic Writer Images collected/provided by Sadie Miyler (Photographer and Designer), Dr. Dye and Zane Phillips Dr. Dye explains that “Symmetry is fascinating to the human eye, which is why it is in so much architecture.” This involves the psychological need for order which draws us to symmetry. Frieze patterns are one example of an art form that is symmetrically pleasing. Dr. Dye has a personal interest in decorative frieze patterns. The image below is one of their recent dyeing  pattern projects. Dr. Dye truly enjoys the creative concepts that can be developed through these designs, and emphasizes how the “Canvas can alter the way a person looks at the patterns.” This information alone is a lot of knowledge that can help us understand why traveling ...

Rugby: McKendree’s Latest Sport

By Dylan Powell, Head Sports Writer Photos taken by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer In February of 2020, McKendree University introduced rugby as the next addition to the University’s athletic department. Since then, the program has endured a lot, from an inaugural season filled with COVID-19 concerns to coaching changes. Despite these circumstances, the players have stood strong and continued to persevere, with the men going 8-4-1 in the spring of 2021 including a 6-win streak to end their season. The women’s team went on a similar streak, going 5-0 on their season. Now, these athletes are looking to make a similar, if not better run in 2022.  This week, I had the pleasure to speak with members of the program about their goals and visions for the men’s and women...

What is McKendree Missing?

By Kenneth Glidden, Head Culture Writer Photos taken by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer McKendree University has been around for nearly 200 years, and for a university to thrive for this long it has to be doing a lot right. With that being said, nothing is perfect and always being on the lookout for ways to improve is how good things become great things. After interviewing upperclassmen, lowerclassmen and professors, there have been some amazing ideas gathered about what McKendree might want to look into implementing for its future students. After interviewing two seniors and two freshmen here at McKendree, there are a few things they believe McKendree is missing. The first question asked was, “In terms of academics, what is Mckendree missing?” Freshman Caitlyn menti...

A Few Tips on Success in the Classroom

By Chloe Gamber, Head Academics Writer Photo collected by Phoebe McCutcheon, Photographer and Designer When it comes to success in the classroom you can always search for quick tips online - however, this does not always mean they are the best tips for everyone's needs. Everyone has their own unique methods of studying and participating in the classroom.  Great practice for every student involves creating a routine. According to teachbetter.com, “Foundation of systems and routines can allow for greater student freedom in the classroom.” This is not only required from the student, but also the professor. A good professor describes how possible it is to thrive in the classroom - this plays into the ability to cooperate. Understanding the viewpoint of a professor is a great way...

Men’s Volleyball: Setting up for Victory

By Dylan Powell, Head Sports Writer Photos taken and collected by Sadie Miyler McKendree athletic teams have been on a roll to start 2022. With the new year, spring sports kick off, one of those being men’s volleyball. The team is currently starting at a 2-3 record, playing four of those five games on the road.  Athletes know that success can sometimes come from location advantage, and it is not an easy task to travel and play in other gyms and stadiums. Playing at home brings an edge, which is what is coming in the next few weeks as the Bearcats will be taking on three opponents at home from Feb. 4 through Feb. 12 in matchups against Maryville University, Ohio State University and Ball State University. The men’s volleyball team boasts two graduate players and four senio...

Remembering Dr. Sameer Dutta

By Kyle Shahenian, Former Student and Contributing Writer Pictures from McKendree.edu and The McKendree Review For those of you who didn’t know, one of McKendree’s Computer Science professors, Dr. Dutta, passed away last year in October. Whether you had a class with him, saw him around from time to time or have no idea who I’m talking about, it’s important for us students to remember the impact he had during his tenure at McKendree. Sameer Dutta, Ph. D. was one of eleven full-time hires in the summer of 2014. He would start out as the assistant professor of Computing. Hailing from India, he was hired by McKendree in an attempt to provide students with instructors from all around the world. During his six and a half year tenure as a Bearcat, he would teach countless hopeful Comput...

Goodbye, From A Few of Us…

By Haley Rey, Editor in Chief Photos from Jamari Johnson, Abigail Kishimoto, Haley Rey, and shutterstock.com For a few of us at McKendree Media, it is time to say goodbye. Abigail Kishimoto, Jamari Johnson, and I (Haley Rey) are all graduating this month, and you will not be hearing from us anymore. Here are a few words we’d like to leave you with, to say goodbye…  Abigail Kishimoto, Head Culture Co-Writer: This semester has flown by! I feel like it was just yesterday that I joined the McKendree Review team, and I am sad to see it end so soon. Writing is something I have always enjoyed, but I did not really appreciate how much it could give you a voice until this year. If I could change one thing, I would have gotten involved with the Review before my last semester he...

Capstone Courses: A Look Into Senior Seminar

By: Chloe Gamber, Head Academic Writer Photos collected by Phoebe McCutcheon and Chloe Gamber Senior Seminar courses are a subject all students will face during their final days at McKendree. These courses are different from the rest and give great insight to research that can be used throughout each student's career. Students should realize that these courses are one of the most beneficial experiences they will have while in their undergraduate program. Having a unique experience through personalized projects is a key factor within these courses. Senior Seminar implements all that was learned up to this point in the students' time at McKendree.  Looking at the Computing department, the Senior Seminar is being taught by Professor Mostafa, who is the head chair of the computi...

Getting to Know PubSafe

By Kenneth Glidden, Head Culture Co-Writer Photos from McKendree University Most Students here have heard about the Public Safety Office, or “PubSafe,” as most like to call them. As written on the Public Safety page of our university’s website, “Public Safety is responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the campus; assisting members of the University community as needed; responding to emergency situations including fire alarms, inclement weather alarms, and other incidents; and enforcing parking and other university policies.” Most students, however, don’t know much about the officers of public safety, what they do, or what services they provide for us students. Caleb Law, a junior here at McKendree, might be a good example of the average student when asked wh...
