A Television Review

Two brothers travel a lonely road. It all began when the youngest brother, Sam, was a baby. He was just a few months old when his father found his mother dead and hanging from the ceiling. She burst into flames. His father, John grabbed baby Sam from his crib and handed him to his older brother, Dean. The three escaped the house and John Winchester (Jeffery Dean Morgan) swore vengeance on whatever did this to his wife. Flash-forward to present day (actually 2005); Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki, Gilmore Girls), a student at Stanford University has just passed his LSAT. He has an interview for a job with the University on Monday, but that all changes when he wakes up in the middle of the night to an intruder. A scuffle ensues until he discovers that that intruder is his brother Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles, Dawson’s Creek).

“Dad’s on a hunting trip and he hasn’t been home in a couple of days,” Dean says (Pilot).

Sam, alarmed, agrees to go with his brother to find their father. When Dean says “hunting trip” it’s not your average game. You see, the boys and their father hunt things that go bump in the night: ghosts, demons, vampires, werewolves, poltergeists-you name it, the Winchesters have fought it.

It has been over eight seasons, and Supernatural is better than ever. In several interviews, the writers have stated that in the beginning, they set out to make a show about two brothers road-tripping across the country and along the way the Winchesters save people by hunting the monsters that lurk in the shadows.

Sam and Dean have been through more than anyone could ever take in one lifetime: death,

the Apocalypse, Eve the Mother of All (monsters that is), a Leviathan take-over, more death; they’ve also been to Hell, Heaven and Purgatory more times than they can count. But through it all, the Winchesters remain on a journey to stop evil- one monster under the bed at a time.

Right now, Supernatural is well into its ninth season and the brothers face the repercussions of trying to close the gates of hell for good back in Season 8. Though while they faced trials that could have led to their deaths, their angel friend, Castiel (Misha Collins), attempted to close the gates of heaven so that the warring angels could figure things out and not bring their war to earth.  But in true Supernatural style, things never go according to plan. As of right now, the angels have fallen to earth, even the angels that had been in prison in heaven, and it’s up to Sam, Dean and Castiel to find a way to re-open heaven and send the angels back from whence they came.
