Tips for Final Exam Season

By Isabella BrandTitle photo retrieved from lifehack.org Welcome to finals week! Some students have already left campus for winter break, while others still have one more week. Here are some tips for getting through the semester's last few days. Get Enough Rest One of the most important tips is getting enough sleep. As a college student, I can attest that this is one of the more challenging things to overcome. If you tend to procrastinate, you may do average bedtime procrastination and complete most of your homework around midnight. But the brain needs seven to nine hours of sleep. Getting six hours of sleep or less can greatly affect memorization. 2. Find a Good Study Spot It can be tempting to study in your room, but you may often find yourself getting distracted. While...

Student Spotlight: Austin Herrera

Written by Megan Melone Photography submitted by Austin Herrera Austin Herrera is a junior majoring in secondary history education. Austin manages McKendree’s archives, the collection of the university’s historical documents, photographs and artifacts. I interviewed Austin on his work in the archives and his experience as a McKendree student: Where are you from? HERRERA: I’m from Belleville, Illinois. You are a history ed. major. Why’d you choose that? HERRERA: I was getting my associate in arts at SWIC (Southwestern Illinois College), and I had a history professor named Raymond Webb, and I was just engrossed in his teaching style. He told history like a story, which was impactful because usually people do not have much interest in history, but in his classroom everybody...

Sitting Down with a SAM

By Elana Melzer, Head Producer of McK RadioTitle photo submitted by MaryAnn Romagna While walking across campus, you have likely seen the flyers about the SAMs, or Student Academic Mentors. But what do the SAMs do, and why should students take advantage of their services? I sat down with one of the SAMs, MaryAnn Romagna, to answer these questions and more! What are the SAMs? The SAMs are one of the many free services available for students at McKendree. As MaryAnn said, “SAMs are Student Academic Mentors, and we are part of ResLife. We hold hours once a week in the ALC [Academic Learning Center] from 6 to 10 p.m., and students can come and ask us for help with homework during that time.” What do the SAMs specialize in? MaryAnn specializes in math and science, but there are ...

It’s that time of year again: the editors for Catalyst are looking for submissions!  Catalyst is McKendree University's student-run arts and literature magazine that gives students a chance to have their work seen by the public. Every spring a small group of student editors compile short stories, poetry, art, and creative nonfiction from students like you!  “The first version of the magazine appeared in print in 1991,” said Dr. Jenny Mueller, professor of English and faculty advisor to Catalyst. “It’s run continuously since then and has been a website since 2016.” The website format has allowed the editors to publish more student art than ever before.
