Trick or Treat at the Stevenson House 2024

Written by Madison Bonner Photography by Madison Bonner On Halloween night, McKendree hosted its annual trick-or-treat event. ResLife and SGA organized the event, though it was a little different from years past. This year, it opened up to a wider audience, allowing trick-or-treaters of all ages to attend, including not only McKendree students but also residents of Lebanon. It was also hosted outside the Stevenson House rather than on campus, which made it more accessible and visible to the town of Lebanon. Improv Club members Coleman Cummins and Dow White dressed as mimes and performed silent skits for passing trick-or-treaters. Senior Spotlight: Kiley Hasenfratz

Written by Megan Melone Photography by McKendree Athletics and Kiley Hasenfratz Kiley Hasenfratz is a senior exercise science major from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Kiley is a forward on the McKendree women’s hockey team. I interviewed Kiley to find out more about her time at McKendree: What is your major? HASENFRATZ: I’m an exercise science major. I got really interested in the body one year, after getting hurt a bunch while playing hockey. So, I initially taught myself how to take care of myself after a game and recover properly, and that just made me really interested in the body, and I thought like you know what? This would be a really good profession to take over and help other people when they can't. Kiley Hasenfratz Why did you decide to study abroad? HASENFRATZ:...

Senior Spotlight: James Cronin

Written By Megan Melone Photography By McKendree Athletics and James Cronin James or “Jimmy” Cronin is from Naperville, Illinois, and is a senior middle school education major focusing on social sciences. Jimmy is also the starting goalkeeper for the McKendree men’s water polo team. I interviewed Jimmy Cronin about his time at McKendree and future plans: What’s your major and why’d you pick it? CRONIN: My major is middle school social science. So, I’m gonna be a middle school history teacher. So, originally I came in, and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, and I just kind of sat around. I ended up getting the Covid-19 year, so I got an extra year to kind of think about everything. Looking back at it, I thought, Who are the people that made the biggest impact in my life and...

Roommate Love and Hate: Maintaining Peace in Your Dorm

By Megan Melone Photography from My Friends from College and eBaum’s World Do you wake up in the middle of the night and see your roommate and think who is this person? We’ve reached the middle of the semester, and the honeymoon phase between you and your roommate is about over, if it didn’t end a while ago. At this point, most students are experiencing burnout. They’re tired from studying for midterms and are quickly coming to the realization that they have another month and a half of schoolwork and extracurricular activities. In the midst of the exhaustion it can be hard to keep the peace between you and your roomie, no matter how much you like them. Whether it's clutter, chores, guests or space, you will find something annoying about that person. And that’s normal! It’s hard to ...

Young Feminist Club Participates in Period Project

By: Grace Gross, Lead Editor Photography by Grace Gross In a dozen campus restrooms, you can find evidence of McKendree Young Feminists’ newest project. McKendree Young Feminists is a student-run organization that was reactivated in the spring of 2024. Dr. Brenda Boudreau and Dr. Shelly Lemons oversee the student organization as its faculty advisors. Karina Modesto is president this semester, while I, Grace Gross, serve as vice president. Since restarting the McKendree Young Feminists, we have had three main goals in mind.  The first goal is to educate the student population about feminism. To some people, the word often carries a negative connotation, such as when the media use it. One way we educated students and faculty about feminism was at our table at the fall involvem...

Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat!

By Elizabeth Collins   Larry Davis III, a McKendree alumnus and former Bearcat football player, has taken over as Director of Inclusive Education and Global Experience at McKendree University. Davis was promoted to the new position this summer after being hired as a Student Success Mentor. His new responsibilities include overseeing the international students to make sure they stay in compliance with school guidelines so they can continue studying at McKendree. He also advocates for marginalized populations of students including African Americans and LGBTQ+. Davis will also be responsible for hosting diversity and inclusion events and training on campus.   But most importantly, Davis hopes students will go to him for help, advice or to plan an event on campus. Davis sai...

Say “Yes, And” to McKendree’s Newest Club!

By Madison Bonner, Writer Photography by Madison Bonner Are you interested in acting but may not want to perform in plays? If so, there’s a new opportunity on campus–Improv Club! Improv is a form of acting that is completely unscripted and created on the spot by actors. Acting without a script challenges you to think on your feet and adapt to different circumstances. This builds confidence and communication skills that can be applied outside of acting. The club provides a laid-back atmosphere where the members can learn while having fun and building relationships on campus. McKendree’s Improv Club was founded by its current president, Dow White. Dow is a sophomore majoring in communication and minoring in political science. On campus he is involved as a chaplain intern for Campus...

Bogey’s Book Club

By: Grace Gross, Lead Editor  Photography by Grace Gross and Office of University Communications and Marketing Welcome back to campus, Bearcats! I hope everyone’s summer was warm and fun. Now that we are all back, I want to introduce one of the new features on campus this year: Bogey’s Book Club! You can find Bogey’s Book Club at 1828 Cafe, near Carnegie Hall. It may not be perfect, but it is still a great addition to the McKendree campus! Bogey’s Book Club is a free book library, meaning all the books inside the library are available for anyone to take! You may leave a book for others to enjoy or find yourself a new read. With this project, I hope students and faculty will donate their old textbooks because buying and renting textbooks can be expensive. After you’ve used...
