Trick or Treat at the Stevenson House 2024

Written by Madison Bonner Photography by Madison Bonner On Halloween night, McKendree hosted its annual trick-or-treat event. ResLife and SGA organized the event, though it was a little different from years past. This year, it opened up to a wider audience, allowing trick-or-treaters of all ages to attend, including not only McKendree students but also residents of Lebanon. It was also hosted outside the Stevenson House rather than on campus, which made it more accessible and visible to the town of Lebanon. Improv Club members Coleman Cummins and Dow White dressed as mimes and performed silent skits for passing trick-or-treaters. Lifelong Learning Exploration Day

By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Photography by Madison Bonner, Elana Melzer and Madison Rohn On election day, McKendree hosted its first Lifelong Learning Exploration Day to academically empower students. Instead of classes, students were encouraged to attend various sessions with faculty, staff and other students to grow their knowledge. President Dobbins inspired the event, which was based on his belief in the importance of impactful education. Students learn about affordable ways to study abroad. Photo by Madison Bonner. Students were given a passport for their learning journey, which they got stamped at the end of each session they attended. Sessions covered a variety of topics, ranging from career skills, to mindfulness and authenticity, to AI and even backpacking!  Direc...

Senior Spotlight: Kiley Hasenfratz

Written by Megan Melone Photography by McKendree Athletics and Kiley Hasenfratz Kiley Hasenfratz is a senior exercise science major from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Kiley is a forward on the McKendree women’s hockey team. I interviewed Kiley to find out more about her time at McKendree: What is your major? HASENFRATZ: I’m an exercise science major. I got really interested in the body one year, after getting hurt a bunch while playing hockey. So, I initially taught myself how to take care of myself after a game and recover properly, and that just made me really interested in the body, and I thought like you know what? This would be a really good profession to take over and help other people when they can't. Kiley Hasenfratz Why did you decide to study abroad? HASENFRATZ:...

Written By Megan Melone Photography By McKendree Athletics and James Cronin James or “Jimmy” Cronin is from Naperville, Illinois, and is a senior middle school education major focusing on social sciences. Jimmy is also the starting goalkeeper for the McKendree men’s water polo team. I interviewed Jimmy Cronin about his time at McKendree and future plans: What’s your major and why’d you pick it? CRONIN: My major is middle school social science. So, I’m gonna be a middle school history teacher. So, originally I came in, and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, and I just kind of sat around. I ended up getting the Covid-19 year, so I got an extra year to kind of think about everything. Looking back at it, I thought, Who are the people that made the biggest impact in my life and...

Witches’ Night Out 2024

Written and photography by Madison Bonner On Saturday, October 19th, the town of Lebanon hosted its annual Witches' Night Out on the historic brick streets as a celebration of the days leading up to Halloween. People of all ages are welcome to attend this event, and costumes are the highlight of the night! The event commenced at 5:00 p.m. and concluded at 9:00 p.m. for an evening of music, contests, food and shopping. Street shops were open throughout the evening, as were outdoor vendors which lined the streets. This was the 22nd year that Lebanon has hosted Witches' Night Out, and it was held earlier in the month this year in hopes of avoiding the colder weather. As the night grew darker, more witches joined the gathering. Soon a costumed crowd filled the historic brick street and ...

Roommate Love and Hate: Maintaining Peace in Your Dorm

By Megan Melone Photography from My Friends from College and eBaum’s World Do you wake up in the middle of the night and see your roommate and think who is this person? We’ve reached the middle of the semester, and the honeymoon phase between you and your roommate is about over, if it didn’t end a while ago. At this point, most students are experiencing burnout. They’re tired from studying for midterms and are quickly coming to the realization that they have another month and a half of schoolwork and extracurricular activities. In the midst of the exhaustion it can be hard to keep the peace between you and your roomie, no matter how much you like them. Whether it's clutter, chores, guests or space, you will find something annoying about that person. And that’s normal! It’s hard to ...

McKendree Theatre to Perform Night of the Living Dead

By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Photography by Michelle Magnussen The undead will roam the Hett stage this weekend! McKendree Theatre is performing Night of the Living Dead Live! as their fall play, which will debut this Friday the 25th at 7:30 pm. The play follows six strangers as they try to survive the night in an abandoned farmhouse surrounded by hordes of flesh-eating zombies. The play is a comedic adaptation of the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. The film, directed by George Romero, was one of the first zombie movies and was met with controversy at the time of its release for its realistic horror images, bleak ending and for having a Black protagonist. But since then, the film has become a horror classic and has greatly influenced the zombie genre. The play adaptation a...

Young Feminist Club Participates in Period Project

By: Grace Gross, Lead Editor Photography by Grace Gross In a dozen campus restrooms, you can find evidence of McKendree Young Feminists’ newest project. McKendree Young Feminists is a student-run organization that was reactivated in the spring of 2024. Dr. Brenda Boudreau and Dr. Shelly Lemons oversee the student organization as its faculty advisors. Karina Modesto is president this semester, while I, Grace Gross, serve as vice president. Since restarting the McKendree Young Feminists, we have had three main goals in mind.  The first goal is to educate the student population about feminism. To some people, the word often carries a negative connotation, such as when the media use it. One way we educated students and faculty about feminism was at our table at the fall involvem...

Abraham Lincoln and McKendree

By Dr. Brian Frederking, Class of 1990 Title photo of Abraham Lincoln from Common American Journal McKendree University will be 200 years old in 2028. One amazing part of its illustrious and resilient history is the many interactions between early McKendree figures and the great Abraham Lincoln. The cause of abolitionism symbiotically forged the trajectories of the young Methodist college and the future United States president. In ways large and small, McKendreans were part of Lincoln’s life – as religious inspirations, political opponents, biographers, wartime emissaries, coworkers, bodyguards and confidantes to the American hero. The relationship between McKendree and Lincoln began in 1832 when Lincoln was a 23-year-old store clerk and rail splitter who ran for the state legisl...
