Young Feminist Club Participates in Period Project

McKendree Young Feminists is a student-run organization that was reactivated in the spring of 2024. Dr. Brenda Boudreau and Dr. Shelly Lemons oversee the student organization as its faculty advisors. Karina Modesto is president this semester, while I, Grace Gross, serve as vice president. Since restarting the McKendree Young Feminists, we have had three main goals in mind. One amazing part of its illustrious and resilient history is the many interactions between early McKendree figures and the great Abraham Lincoln. The cause of abolitionism symbiotically forged the trajectories of the young Methodist college and the future United States president. In ways large and small, McKendreans were part of Lincoln’s life – as religious inspirations, political opponents, biographers, wartime emissaries, coworkers, bodyguards and confidantes to the American hero. William Davis Shares Business Advice with Students

By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Cover photo from McKendree University Marketing and Communications Last Thursday, students received life and business advice from William Davis, the Illinois Region President for Deaconess Illinois and Chief Administrative Officer of Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon and Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Davis oversees multiple hospital facilities in Illinois and is known for his thoughtfulness, giving back to the community and leadership skills. He was nationally recognized as a “Rural Hospital CEO to Know” and “Black Healthcare Leader to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review. Davis received his Master of Business Administration degree from McKendree, and he returned to his alma mater as a part of the Lanter Lecture Series. ...

Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat!

By Elizabeth Collins Larry Davis III, a McKendree alumnus and former Bearcat football player, has taken over as Director of Inclusive Education and Global Experience at McKendree University. Davis was promoted to the new position this summer after being hired as a Student Success Mentor. His new responsibilities include overseeing the international students to make sure they stay in compliance with school guidelines so they can continue studying at McKendree. He also advocates for marginalized populations of students including African Americans and LGBTQ+. Davis will also be responsible for hosting diversity and inclusion events and training on campus. But what do the SAMs do, and why should students take advantage of their services? I sat down with one of the SAMs, MaryAnn Romagna, to answer these questions and more! What are the SAMs? The SAMs are one of the many free services available for students at McKendree. As MaryAnn said, “SAMs are Student Academic Mentors, and we are part of ResLife. Improv is a form of acting that is completely unscripted and created on the spot by actors. Acting without a script challenges you to think on your feet and adapt to different circumstances. This builds confidence and communication skills that can be applied outside of acting. The club provides a laid-back atmosphere where the members can learn while having fun and building relationships on campus. McKendree’s Improv Club was founded by its current president, Dow White. Hockey and Golf Start Season, Football and Soccer Win

Written by Megan Melone Photography and Scores from McKendree Athletics It was another busy week for McKendree Athletics as teams brought home victories and more Bearcats began their seasons. Men's Hockey The McKendree men’s hockey team opened their 2024-25 season at Maryville University. Goalkeeper Dyllan Dallaire greatly supported the team, blocking 42 of 46 shots by Maryville. Still, McKendree lost the match with a score of 4-0. The team played again on the 13th against the University of Illinois and saw a loss of 3-7. But the Bearcats will return on the ice on September 20th against Missouri State University in Springfield. Goalkeeper Dyllan Dallaire blocked 42 of Maryville's shots. Recap of McKendree Athletics’ Opening Matches

Women's Soccer Women’s soccer opened their season with a win against the University of Alabama Huntsville at Charger Park with a goal by Lena Higgins, a senior forward for McKendree. Maicy Mueller, a junior goalkeeper, made several saves throughout the game defending McKendree’s goal, aiding the win and making for a great debut, as it was her very first collegiate match. The final score was 1-0, adding another notch to McKendree’s winning history against Alabama Huntsville: 3-0-0. By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Photos submitted by Sonia Halabi Bearcat Sonia Halabi made the most of her summer by representing McKendree at two international conventions in Singapore and Montreal for Rotaract Club and sociology, respectfully. Sonia Halabi is a senior majoring in sociology. She is also involved in many extracurricular activities, including Rotaract Club, which is part of the international service organization, Rotary International. Sonia learned about Singapore’s history while she was there for the Rotary convention. Sonia’s involvement in the Rotaract Club is what brought her to Singapore this summer. Now that we are all back, I want to introduce one of the new features on campus this year: Bogey’s Book Club! You can find Bogey’s Book Club at 1828 Cafe, near Carnegie Hall. It may not be perfect, but it is still a great addition to the McKendree campus! Bogey’s Book Club is a free book library, meaning all the books inside the library are available for anyone to take! You may leave a book for others to enjoy or find yourself a new read.
