Diversity Carnival

By: Grace Gross, Editor in Chief Photography: Grace Gross The McKendree University Office of Residence Life hosted its annual Diversity Carnival on Tuesday, March 21st. The carnival took place from 11 AM to 1 PM, originally supposed to be located in the campus quad outside of Ames Dining Hall. Unfortunately, it was raining during that time, so the carnival was moved to inside the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. The Diversity Carnival was a hit! Students and faculty could engage to win raffle prizes, get free items, eat snacks, and talk to cool people. Most importantly, the opportunity to learn about others was given to all. Women’s History Month Choir Concert

Dr. McDonald, assistant Professor of Music Education, featured songs written and composed by women, and English Professor Dr. Muller read several poems written by women. This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is celebrating women who tell our stories. Dr. McDonald selected wonderful pieces that spoke to the essence of the theme. Set Yourself Up for Success: How Student-Athletes at McKendree Prepare for Competition

By: Elma Oijens Sjoelin It was not until college that I started reflecting on how I prepare for my soccer games. I never really had a standard routine, but when I came to McKendree, I met other student-athletes who knew exactly what they needed to do to prepare for competitions. I found it interesting how different everyone’s routines were, and after listening to and observing what my friends did to prepare for games, I was inspired to create a routine for myself. I quickly realized that what I did before my soccer games affected my performance, but I also realized that what worked for others did not always do the trick for me. Women’s Bowling: Defending the National Title

Last year, they won the NCAA bowling championship, and with a winning history behind them, the women’s bowling team is now aiming to defend their national title. A history of winning comes with high expectations and a lot of pressure, and when you are number one, others are hungry to knock you off the podium. Catalyst is a student-run magazine that strives to give McKendree students a chance to express themselves artistically. Months on End: A Wonderful Play Put on by Our Peers

By: Kristina Ferry Photography by Michelle Magnussen Over the weekend, a group of our peers here at McKendree put on a wonderful play that they had been practicing for months. This play was called Months on End, and it was written by Craig Pospisil in 2002. This play covered the lives of eight young individuals over the course of a year and the struggles they face within their relationships, both familial and romantic. Some of the key relationships that the audience watched roll out were: Phoebe and Ben, two fiancees who have some lingering doubt about whether marriage is right for them, and Elaine and Walter, a couple unsure of what their future actions should be as Walter is currently divorcing his wife. The Person Behind the Poetry: Dr. Jenny Mueller

By Elexis Baltimore, Contributing Writer Featured Picture: Courtesy of Dr. Jenny Mueller “Wow, your parents have a lot of books!” With a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet for a mother and a father who was deeply engrossed in the arts, Dr. Jenny Mueller heard this a number of times as a kid. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, where her parents would make the 45-minute commute to attend art events in the city including a number of poetry readings. Dr. Mueller recounts that in suburban life it was almost unheard of to go to the city for anything other than shopping and school field trips, which often made her feel different, “but in a good way.” She says. To combat this issue Students and Staff at McKendree have shared some of their favorite places, no further than two hours away from campus, where they like to spend their time outside; no cornfields included. Water Polo.. in the Midwest?

The person responsible for making the program’s first year successful is Colleen Lischwe, head women’s water polo coach and assistant men’s water polo coach. Like many Universities nation-wide, McKendree heavily prides itself on having very successful and well known athletic teams in the Midwest region. While the school has a variety of different teams offered, a total of 34 men’s and women’s teams, this school year marks the one year anniversary of a unique addition to the athletic department: Men and Women’s Water Polo.
