Student Spotlight: Austin Herrera

Written by Megan Melone Photography submitted by Austin Herrera Austin Herrera is a junior majoring in secondary history education. Austin manages McKendree’s archives, the collection of the university’s historical documents, photographs and artifacts. I interviewed Austin on his work in the archives and his experience as a McKendree student: Where are you from? HERRERA: I’m from Belleville, Illinois. You are a history ed. major. Why’d you choose that? HERRERA: I was getting my associate in arts at SWIC (Southwestern Illinois College), and I had a history professor named Raymond Webb, and I was just engrossed in his teaching style. He told history like a story, which was impactful because usually people do not have much interest in history, but in his classroom everybody...

Bogey’s Book Club

By: Grace Gross, Lead Editor  Photography by Grace Gross and Office of University Communications and Marketing Welcome back to campus, Bearcats! I hope everyone’s summer was warm and fun. Now that we are all back, I want to introduce one of the new features on campus this year: Bogey’s Book Club! You can find Bogey’s Book Club at 1828 Cafe, near Carnegie Hall. It may not be perfect, but it is still a great addition to the McKendree campus! Bogey’s Book Club is a free book library, meaning all the books inside the library are available for anyone to take! You may leave a book for others to enjoy or find yourself a new read. With this project, I hope students and faculty will donate their old textbooks because buying and renting textbooks can be expensive. After you’ve used...

The Wonders of Holman Library

By Isabella Brand, Writer Photography by Isabella Brand As a first-year student at McKendree, I love exploring the campus to see what different locations offer. Holman Library piqued my interest because it has so many resources for students. Students can check out a variety of items (not just books!).  The library offers GoPros, laptops, Chromebooks, calculators, DVDs, Blu-rays, board games, miscellaneous cords, and textbooks. Depending on the type of item checked out, due dates will vary. Make sure to pay attention to when the items are due so you don’t get fined! Taking advantage of textbooks, laptops, and DVDs by borrowing them from the library can save you some money. Calculators are an excellent loan, especially if you are taking a math class. Free books for the public to...

Best Spots for a Midterm Study Session

By: Kristina Ferry, Writer Photos taken by Phoebe Mccutcheon Midterm season can be hard on college students, and McKendree is no different. During this time of year a lot of students take their studies seriously, either to help them not fail a class or to maintain their high grade. Especially around midterms, it is important to know what the best study spots are on campus and how well they work. The three main study spots on campus are the Hub, the library, and 1828 Café. The Hub is a relatively new place on campus, but it is a great spot to study with a group of friends. Several rooms can be reserved that have whiteboards or projection screens for students who want to study on the big screen. Unlike other locations that can get noisy or require students to stay quiet, the Hub en...

Coming soon: Renovation of Holman Library

BY ANNA BELMONTE Staff Writer Recently, we have explored one of McKendree’s plans for the Forward Campaign: the renovation of Voigt Science Hall. Now let’s turn our attention to another objective: the renovation of Holman Library. When it opened in 1969, Holman Library was a great addition to McKendree’s campus that students still enjoy today. However, in the age of technology, modern libraries are employing library space to encourage collaboration, community and technology use. “[Libraries have] gone from very book-centric to very technology-centric,” says Senior Vice President Victoria Dowling. Paula Martin, Director of Holman Library, says that having a technologically-equipped library “helps us to be able to evolve for whatever technological changes happen in the future. It’s impossib...
