Illinois House of Representatives Election Overview

By Caden Brooks, Dameion Hatten & Anna Warkel With the midterm elections approaching quickly, it is very important to know who is running and to understand the views they have before voting. It is not a good idea to roll up to the polling site and just take a guess if you truly care about who you want to be in office. For the state of Illinois, two candidates are running for the House of Representatives. Republican Mike Bost is currently in office. Running against him is Democrat Homer Markel.   Mike Bost graduated from Murphysboro High School in 1979. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from 1979 to 1982. Prior to Mike Bost's election to Congress, he served for two decades in the Illinois House of Representatives. He then rose to a leadership position as t...

Importance of Voting in Midterm Elections

By: Reagen Berra, Kamryn Schmalz, and Maria Voss With the midterm elections coming up on November 8th, many people may wonder what the midterm elections entail and why it is important to vote in them. Midterm elections happen nearly two years into a president’s term and are focused on a number of offices, including the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. All 435 seats in the House are decided during the midterm elections, and a third of the 100 seats are decided in the Senate.  Whoever controls the House or Senate controls the agenda and influences national politics which is why the midterms are so important. (U.S. Mission Italy, 2022) Voting in midterm elections can have just as big of an impact on the country as the presidential election due to which way the House and ...

McKendree Students Attend Rally to Save Higher Ed

By Grant Riggs, Editor-in-Chief On Wednesday, February 8, a group of McKendree students attended a rally at the Capitol building in Springfield, Ill. in support of higher education and the MAP grant. The grant, which does not require repayment and is given to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges, has provided numerous students the opportunity to attend college. The trip included individual meetings with Illinois State Senators and Representatives, as well as the actual rally, which was held by The Illinois Coalition to Invest in Higher Education. The rally was led by Dave Tretter, president of The Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities, and included Western Illinois University President Dr. Jack Thomas as one of its speakers. McKendree Students React to The Trump Presidency

By Allison Donofrio, Contributing Writer Since becoming the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump has been making headlines. I created a survey to discuss how McKendree University students feel about President Donald Trump on a scale from very negative to very positive. The survey asked a series of questions regarding President Trump’s policies from his first few weeks in office, including his executive orders on the Dakota Access and Keystone Oil Pipelines, rolling provisions on the Affordable Care Act, ordering organizations that provide abortion services motionless, building the wall and his travel restrictions. Lastly, it asks for any additional comments about President Trump. 22 students from various areas of study were randomly selected to discuss their opinions on the P...

The 2016 presidential election has many Americans questioning who they want to represent them to the world. Many question if the two primary candidates can lead their country effectively. Many feel like there are questions that still need to be answered. Luckily, McKendree University can help answer some of those questions. On Oct. 18, everyone on campus and in the surrounding area are welcome to join political science professors Dr. Brian Frederking and Dr. Ann Collins along with journalist/author Sarah Kendzior (The View from Flyover Country, The Globe and Mail, Foreign Policy) for a lively discussion about the current state of U.S. politics, the success of Donald Trump’s campaign and what it could mean for future elections. The panel discussion will be held in the Hettenhausen Center f...

McKendree “Bern-cats”

BY LOGYN NORRIS Contributing Writer On the early morning of March 5, SIU Edwardsville became a hotspot for the Democratic public with the arrival of presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. The Vadalabene Center on SIUE’s campus, which normally holds 5,000 visitors, was invaded with thousands of guests. The enormous crowd was allowed into the building at 8 a.m. and anticipated Sanders’ speech, which started at 10:30. I arrived there at 6:30 a.m., and even then the line was already beginning to wrap around the building. Some camped out, others got there in the wee hours of the morning and many gladly waited in the very back of the line in order to experience this event. (more…)
