The Dilemma

clip_image002The Dilemma is the latest comedy from director Ron Howard, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Basically, the premise is Kevin James and Vince Vaughn are best friends and James’ wife, played by Winona Ryder, is having an affair with Channing Tatum. Vaughn discovers this and struggles with how to tell James while hilarity ensues. Or does it?

No, it doesn’t. The real dilemma is this: an unfunny movie pretending to be funny. I’ll admit that I didn’t particularly want to see this, but I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. Then the movie started, and as much as I like Vince Vaughn, he couldn’t redeem any of it. He struggles way too much with something that he shouldn’t be that conflicted about, and is given little reason to be so, while the movie plays this up for laughs. It then tries to turn on itself toward the end, revealing that Vaughn’s character had a gambling addiction as if the mere mention of an “issue” will suddenly make the audience take this bullshit seriously. Skip it and watch a rerun of The Andy Griffith Show instead. It’s funnier.
