Spectrum Alliance Presents: Drag Show

By Grace Gross, Head Culture Editor Photos taken and collect by Grace Gross McKendree University Spectrum Alliance sponsored a drag show at the Hett on Friday, April 8th. This event was open to students, faculty and the general public. There was a very good turnout! Ella Lehman, president of Spectrum Alliance, stated that 130 people attended the drag show.  Ella reached out to Roxxy Malone, the main host of the drag show, a few months ahead of time. “Roxxy put together the rest of the performers from her drag family and they all brought their own music and such, so that part was probably easiest.”  Ella mentioned how the reservation process for the Hett was a bit complicated. “It went smoothly thanks to Liz Crabtree and Julia Hunt.” One of the most difficult parts of...

An Academic Excellence Day That Connects The World

Magdalena Knapp, Editor in Chief Pictures: mckendree.edu Many things have changed over the past few weeks because of the Coronavirus. It has changed the way we used to live, the way students go to school, and the way we interact with other people in our daily life. One thing has not changed: McKendree University's commitment to their students. This year, more than ever, it is important to celebrate the students' accomplishments. Despite the sudden changes, McKendree University will be hosting its annual Academic Excellence Celebration Day, just in a slightly modified way. McKendree University will hold a virtual electronic Academic Excellence Celebration on Thursday, April 23, 2020 and it will be called the "eAEC." Students and faculty members have worked together to create an online web...

What’s the Deal with Coronavirus?

Kae Edgcomb, Contributing Writer Pictures taken by Kae Edgcomb in the Office of Health Services, McKendree University You have probably been seeing it on the news. Maybe you have heard jokes about it around campus. You might have discussed the topic in a class. It is hard to escape discussions to some capacity on the coronavirus. But what actually is the coronavirus? Is it really a virus named after a Mexican beer company? To begin, let me explain what a coronavirus is. Coronaviruses were first documented in the 1960s. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) the common human coronavirus typically causes a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, just like the common cold or rhinovirus. Most people will have this virus at some point in their lives and h...

Brightspace – McK Writes History

Magdalena Knapp, Editor in Chief Pictures provided by Magdalena Knapp and Mckendree University January 22nd 2020, time 11:50 a. m., PAC Lobby: McKendree writes history. The year 2020 has already been a year full of changes for McKendree University. Not only have we now officially found a new president, but McKendree University has decided, after almost 15 years of collaboration, that Blackboard will no longer be our affiliated online program for classes. On January 22nd 2020, the PAC lobby was decorated in bright orange, the color of our new program provider: D2L Brightspace– Desire 2 Learn. George Kriss, Erin Campbell, and Tami Eggleston were in charge of organizing the big D2L Brightspace reveal party. “D2L Brightspace is more modern and user-friendly. When you open Facebook you get ex...

Ready, Set, Swing!

By Jessica Baker, Contributing Writer It’s a beautiful Sunday on October 13th at the Sunset Hills Athletic Complex in South County. Four fields have games, crowds are cheering, and in the distance a faint beeping can be heard from each field. A batter steps up to the plate on field three with assistance from the pitcher. The batter requires assistance due to wearing a blindfold, along with almost every player on the field. This isn’t a crazy drinking game; this is Beepball. Beepball is a modified baseball game for the visually impaired. MindsEye, a nonprofit for the blind located in the Metro East area, hosts two local Beepball tournaments a year.  The National Beep Baseball Association has been in place since 1976 and currently has 37 official teams across the United States. They also ha...

Seeing the World Without Breaking the Bank

Emily Lease, Contributing Writer Pictures by Jessica Hofmann Growing up, I always was interested in seeing the world. When I started going to McKendree University I found some interesting things about their study abroad programs. McKendree offers five different study abroad opportunities. When looking at study abroad programs, one thing that students need to be aware of, though, is the GPA requirements. For example, if you even want to apply to any of these programs you have to have at least a 2.75 GPA and a minimum of 45 credit hours at McKendree. This means that a lot of preplanning is involved if you are thinking of doing study abroad. The first opportunity offered is through a company called the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA: Butler). This company offers hundreds of different educ...

Fields of Faith

By Madeline Cade, Contributing Writer Photo credits: featured image- Eddie Sutton, first photo- Madeline Cade, second photo- Ashlynn Grant Hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), McKendree University’s first-ever Fields of Faith took place on Oct. 17, 2019. The students of FCA led around 100 people through a night of worship and prayer. This was the product of weeks of planning. So many things had to be prepared in order for the night to go smoothly: a speaker and a band had to be booked, students had to feel ready to give their testimonies, the field had to be available, the gym had to be ready in case we needed a backup space or place for bad weather, and there had to be plenty of advertising to make sure there was strong attendance. The planning stage was a long process ...

Mirrored Human Intention: The Art of Life

By Christopher Fernandez, Contributing Writer There are many wonderful, beautiful, and tragic things that can be seen in life.  The truest expression of life is something that will always be sought out by individuals, but for some, that siren’s call is in the world of art. Art, while a wide-ranging discipline, can be boiled down to certain areas including musical arts, sculpting, and painting. On October 9th, Susan Bryant gave a Brown Bag presentation to showcase her art and what inspired the galleries she spoke about. Bryant, a retired art professor and photographer from the Austin Peay University, was invited to McKendree University to give a Brown Bag speech, returning after five years.  She discussed a series that she was going to be unveiling on October 10th at the gallery in Lebanon...

Presidential Brown Bag

By Christopher Fernandez, Contributing Writer Four score and seven years ago, we had barely begun to scratch the surface of the long history of McKendree University.  The school that we call home and have come to love over the years has developed from the small McKendree College to the now prosperous McKendree University.  In this time McKendree has seen its fair share of Presidents come and go. While many individuals who held the title of President have helped to shape McKendree into the bustling university that we enjoy today, some have had much more interesting histories and achievements than others. With such a rich and deep history dating back to our origins in 1828, the McKendree University Archives & Museum group put on a Brown Bag to showcase the history of these men.  Justin ...

Then, it just hit me.” I heard this statement come from my research partner, Raina Isaacs, as soon as we stepped into Alumni Hall at Knox College. On April 20th, we and two other groups traveled to the Illinois-Iowa (ILLOWA) Undergraduate Psychology Empirical Research Conference to present studies that we had poured our blood, sweat and tears into over the course of the semester. We traveled for nearly three hours, packing ourselves like sardines in Raina’...
