Always Know The Right Tools

By: Marisa Ortega, Editor This past Tuesday, April 5 McKendree University’s Career Services hosted a Dining/Professional Etiquette Seminar for students to learn about what could happen in a business dining atmosphere.  The description provided by Career Services to inform students of this event stated, “Enjoy a multi-course meal while you learn about proper dining and professional etiquette, explore what business casual means and have the opportunity to participate in a networking exercise”.  Photos provided by Jennifer Pickerell This took place within the Hett and all students were told to dress in business casual clothing to create the business dining atmosphere. Once they arrived, students interacted with others to create a safe, open business atmosphere before s...

The Big Mysteries of Financial Aid

By Landon Cole, Contributing Writer Like many college students, I fall into a category that can make the financial aid process difficult. The Federal Student Aid office grossly overestimates my family’s contribution to my education when, in reality, I paid out-of-pocket for my associate’s degree from a community college, and I’m relying on loans to pay for my bachelor’s degree. The EFC (estimated family contribution) is calculated using parents’ combined household income to estimate a student’s eligibility for federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized student loans. These EFCs are often tied up in mortgages and car payments and are not accurate estimates of parents’ ability or willingness to pay for their child’s education. In my case, because the Department of Education estimates that my...

Campus Connectivity Crisis: Students Take on the McKendree Wi-Fi

By Madeline Cade, Contributing Writer In 2016, McKendree gave up cable in order to enhance our Wi-Fi connectivity. Fast forward to 2019 and we have more Wi-Fi problems than before the fix. There seem to be daily complications when completing or turning in online assignments. Ironically, even as I sat writing this piece, there were three times over the course of a few days where I had to stop due to little to no connectivity. I was genuinely interested in hearing what other students had to say about the McKendree Wi-Fi crisis. I first took to my Instagram to get input directly from students. I set up polls on my story to see what the Bearcats thought about the Wi-Fi. I started my survey by asking if they had ever had a problem with the Wi-Fi. I had 293 McKendree students answer this one.  ...

Bearcats Fall Short, But Set Gaze Forward

By Andrew GardewineMany sports teams on campus competed in their conference meets during the spring semester. Many teams' achievements have been swallowed by the waves of other information that have been thrown at the students this semester. This is a detailed article about the accomplisments of our Men's and Women's track and field team at their conference meet. It was a good meet for the Bearcats - The men finished 2nd overall in the team standings with many podium finishes, falling short only to the University of Indianapolis. On the women’s side they placed 5th overall with great individual finishes. Head coach Michael Mendez was pleased with the team's performance saying, “We may not have finished where we wanted as a team, but I am proud of the way we performed. When we show up, ou...

Model UN Success

All images from Katherine Gemmingen, Editor Last week, McKendree University had yet another success. McKendree represented Poland at the 59th Midwest Model United Nations conference in St. Louis February 20-23. Senior Andrew Wagner won an Outstanding Delegate Award. Other students attending the conference were Haylee Christ, Aron Durant, Justin Fausz, Taylor Ganz, Katherine Gemmingen, Cameron Nollman, Caden Owens, Rebecca Postula, Hannah Voudrie, and Corben Zanger. Many students may not know what Model UN is since the group is relatively small. Students go to conferences as delegates of a designated country in the United Nations and attempt to represent the country's stances on specific issues. In addition to the St. Louis conference, McKendree's Model UN team travels to Chicago every...

Join the Green Side, Learn About Recycling on Campus / Make McKendree Green

By Ashley Hathaway, Contributing Writer As a student of McKendree, I have always cherished the faculty and staff that encourage students to be involved highly in academics, sports, and the variety of clubs on campus. While students are constantly encouraged to be involved and often see promotion of different athletic events and club meetings across campus, I cannot recall an instance where I have been encouraged to recycle or compost while on campus. While there happens to be an occasional recycling bin throughout the classrooms and a single compost bin near the garden behind the student success center, recycling and composting seems to be lacking around McKendree. Even when recycling bins are present, it seems as if our community is lackadaisical in their efforts to recycle their waste. A...

Cobblestone Eatery and Drinkery

By Jawaun Jackson, Contributing Writer Pictures by Jawaun Jackson Frequently visited by the student body of McKendree for the drinkery and nightlife, Cobblestone boasts a pretty tasty menu during weeknights and weekend mornings. I first visited the establishment for nourishment between dawn and noon; in simpler terms I came for brunch. I was at an impasse with the brunch menu, perplexed by the variety of choices. I eventually settled for a smoked brisket omelet with a horseradish blended cheese and hash browns.       Most styles of cooking only call for about 1-3 eggs when making an omelet, but at Cobblestone it's 4. Now, I watch a lot of cooking shows and have a novice to intermediate knowledge of basic cooking techniques. When I saw a 4-egg omelet, I knew I had to t...

8 Things College Students Can Do to Save The Environment

By Jawaun Jackson Pictures: google.com While we see our world as an okay place to live sometimes, it’s hurting, and man’s actions upon our earth have caused drastic changes to the status quo. In recent centuries we have accelerated the natural changes of the earth’s progression. Scientists have found that the earth naturally will warm up and then freeze over, but this change takes thousands of years to complete. Thanks to us humans, we are cutting the time by hundreds of years with our current ways of living. As a college student it may seem too hard or tasking to live a more “green” lifestyle, but here are eight easy ways college students can help the environment.   1.  Plate Usage It may not sound like much, but if we can use less plates while eating in Ames or even at home we can...

Reflections: McKendree survivors

By Nathan Ploense, Contributing Writer A year at McKendree cannot go by where Residence Life holds its famed Sex in the Dark program. While usually aimed at freshman, it offers the opportunity for students to ask sex and gender questions, in a judgment free area, and receive general answers back. Though proven to be a popular program on campus, many students feel that it has started to run its course and become stale. Not even the offer of free food is necessarily enough to get people out of their room or break from their busy schedules to participate. However, a new program was put in the works when Resident Assistant Elizabeth Graham wanted to re-create the old program into something that explored heavier, less talked about topics. The beginning of the event – Michael Calhoun When...
