Amesgiving: McKendree’s Annual Thanksgiving Feast

By: Madison Bonner, Writer Photography: Madison Bonner Happy Thanksgiving, Bearcats! We hope you enjoyed your fall break. Due to Thanksgiving break, McKendree celebrates Thanksgiving the Thursday before the actual holiday. This celebration is an annual feast known as Amesgiving, as it is held in Ames Dining Hall. Amesgiving is a long-held tradition on campus. Ames Dining Hall was built in 1968 and dedicated to the university’s first president: E. R. Ames. The first Amesgiving was held in 1995. Since then, the staff at Ames have continued to prepare a festive meal for students every year. Chandler Morley, the Director of Ames Dining Hall, explained that the whole staff gets involved in this event. This includes cooks such as Dave Pasterski, Addison Cummins, Justin Connelly, Jus...

From ZZZ’S To A’s: A Deep Dive Into Sleep-Induced Learning

From Zzz’s to A’s: A Deep Dive into Sleep-Induced Learning | Popular Delusions (wordpress.com) Imagine if you could study for your midterms by listening to tape recordings of every lecture while sound asleep, rather than cramming during the day or pulling all-nighters. This phenomenon, known as sleep learning, would be an ideal situation and it seems a common belief among college students, 68% of whom believe that people can learn new information while asleep (Lilienfeld et al., 2010). But is it true that students can harness the power of their subconscious to learn new languages, study test material, and improve themselves all while getting a good night’s rest? To answer that question, it’s important to understand the science of sleep. Sleep is a dynamic process with distinct stage...

Women’s Soccer: Queens of the GLVC

By Elma Oijens Sjoelin, Sports Writer Title photo by Pat Knapinski Two weeks ago, the McKendree women’s soccer team made their way to Peoria, Illinois to take care of business. The business was the GLVC Championship, and they took care of it! Dubbed the queens of the GLVC, the team flew to Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan last week to play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Being a part of the team, I have the privilege to share these experiences with my teammates, and winning the GLVC Championship was something truly unforgettable. We drove up to Peoria, Illinois to partake in the championship, which this year was played on neutral ground. After a three-hour long bus ride, we arrived at Corwin Clatt Stadium in East Peoria, Illinois and did a training s...

Mckendree’s 2023-2024 Lincoln Laureate: Bradley Eston

By Megan Melone, Writer Photography submitted by Brad Eston According to The Lincoln Academy of Illinois, “Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.” Every year, seniors from every college in Illinois are nominated by their college and are recipients of this prestigious award recognizing their excellence. McKendree’s 2023-2024 recipient is senior Brad Eston. Brad is a music education major from Quincy, Illinois. I interviewed Brad about becoming a Student Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois:   Have you always wanted to do music education? ESTON: I did not, actually. That was a conversation we had at this event. So, I originally...

Why Work-Study Might be Right for You

By: Kaitlyn Williams Nearly everyone knows the exceedingly high costs of universities, from thousands of dollars in tuition to hundreds for textbooks, and, for many students, another few thousand in residency and meal plan costs every semester. Most don’t have the luxury of getting a full-ride scholarship or winning the financial lottery of being born to rich parents. So, it’s no surprise that many have to resort to financial aid, particularly student loans, to pay for college. Unfortunately, this often comes at the price of student debt, something students are increasingly becoming all too familiar with. But how does one avoid this? With a majority of higher-paying careers requiring degrees and society’s expectation to attend college, simply “not going” isn’t always an option. One ...

Spooky Sex: Sex Safety and Wellness Fair at McKendree

By: Megan Melone, Writer Photography by Megan Melone and Madison Rohn Linus from the Peanuts comics and a black cat both made an appearance at the fair! On Friday, October 29th, the third annual Spooky Sex fair was held at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. Spooky Sex, hosted by the Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board, offered information and resources on sex, dating, testing, and protection. Tables offered informative games with prizes. Gifts like condoms, ribbons, and first aid kits were given out, and students could enter to win raffle prizes related to sexual health. Since it was close to Halloween, students were encouraged to dress up, and many tables gave out candy. While the event is a fun spin on sexual education, it is important to ha...

The Wonders of Holman Library

By Isabella Brand, Writer Photography by Isabella Brand As a first-year student at McKendree, I love exploring the campus to see what different locations offer. Holman Library piqued my interest because it has so many resources for students. Students can check out a variety of items (not just books!).  The library offers GoPros, laptops, Chromebooks, calculators, DVDs, Blu-rays, board games, miscellaneous cords, and textbooks. Depending on the type of item checked out, due dates will vary. Make sure to pay attention to when the items are due so you don’t get fined! Taking advantage of textbooks, laptops, and DVDs by borrowing them from the library can save you some money. Calculators are an excellent loan, especially if you are taking a math class. Free books for the public to...

FreshEats: Students Helping Students Eat Fresh

By Madison Bonner, Writer Title photo: students Mike Milesi and Tomoki Asano present their sushi to-go box for FreshEats. It all started with a Snapchat story… In August of 2023, students began seeing menus posted to the McKendree group Snapchat story. Flyers appeared around campus and at apartments. These advertisements promised several home-cooked meals such as salmon, chicken and rice, and sushi. But what were these menus for? And who started it all? The menus were posted by a food delivery service called FreshEats: a brand new, completely student-run organization. It is managed by two students at McKendree, who work together to cook, advertise, and deliver the food. The idea is to give McKendree students healthy alternatives to processed food, such as fast food or instant ...
