Wrestling in the Hett: A Historic Event

Written by and photos taken by Elma Oijens Sjoelin On February 7th, 2023, something historical happened on the campus of McKendree University. For the first time in history, a sporting event was held in the Russel E. & Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, commonly known as “The Hett.” The Hett has always had a busy schedule of hosting art events, plays, shows, and fairs, but never before had a sporting event been held in the spacious state-of-the-art facility.  The McKendree men’s wrestling team had the honor of hosting and winning a duel against Davenport University on the Hett stage. The wrestlers added another win to their record with a final score of 55 points to McKendree and -1 to Davenport. McKendree totaled five pins and two technical falls in their win against...

McKendree Rotaract Club

With the plethora of clubs that are present on campus, there is no shortage of organizations for students to join. One club that is often overlooked is McKendree’s Rotaract Club. This type of club isn’t reserved for McKendree, or even universities in general, but is an international organization. There are community-led Rotary organizations around the globe that are welcome to all members. In fact, it is quite common for community-led branches of Rotary to sponsor and partner with their local university’s club. For example, McKendree’s club is a partner with the Rotary Club of O’Fallon Sunrise. Rotaract Club does a lot of good for the community that often goes unnoticed and underappreciated. One example is that last year while the war on Ukraine was first raging the country, McKendree’...

Dear Bogey: Struggling Younger Sister

Dear Bogey, Families can be hard to deal with sometimes, and I am having a hard time connecting with my older sister recently. We used to be very close when we both lived at home, but ever since I moved away for college, it has been hard to stay close. I don’t want to lose the relationship that I have with my sister, but she is making it hard for me to want to keep our relationship. She is my older sister, so she thinks that she has to be a mother to me when that isn’t what I want at all. I just want to have a sister that I don’t feel like I have to hide stuff from. The last time we hung out we had the biggest fight that we have ever had, and things haven’t been the same as before. She got mad at me because I didn’t tell her that I was going somewhere, and as her younger sister, she t...

Months on End: A Wonderful Play Put on by Our Peers

By: Kristina Ferry Photography by Michelle Magnussen Over the weekend, a group of our peers here at McKendree put on a wonderful play that they had been practicing for months. This play was called Months on End, and it was written by Craig Pospisil in 2002. This play covered the lives of eight young individuals over the course of a year and the struggles they face within their relationships, both familial and romantic. Some of the key relationships that the audience watched roll out were: Phoebe and Ben, two fiancees who have some lingering doubt about whether marriage is right for them, and Elaine and Walter, a couple unsure of what their future actions should be as Walter is currently divorcing his wife.  Walter (played by Hunter Tucker) and Elaine (played by Jayden Touchet...

A Boy and His Cows

By JT Russell, Contributing Writer Lebanon, Ill. - As the birds begin to chirp and the grass once again turns a vibrant green, college students can’t help but envision the imminent summer break.  For most college kids, summer break means sleeping in until ten o’clock, road trips with your friends and consuming a few too many adult beverages in an activity that the music group Little Big Town characterizes as 'Day Drinking.' However, for 20-year-old Bradley Robert Wyss II, summer days consist of 5 A.M. alarms, immense amounts of Colombian dark roast coffee, Waylon Jennings radio on Pandora and a fair amount of cow excrement coating his Ariat work boots. Brad, a Junior at McKendree, is currently studying marketing. In addition to his studies, he is a defensive end on the football team and ...

A Crash Course in Flirting Through Different Cultures

By Magdalena Knapp, Contributing Writer Many of you have heard of pick-up lines such as “Do you know how much a polar bear weighs? – Enough to break the ice! Hi, how are you?” Pick-up lines are a common way of flirting or starting a conversation. The language of love is spoken by everyone all over the world; however, is there a flirting “standard” that works in every country of the world? According to many movies, like Titanic and every Nicholas Sparks movie ever, one deep look in a girls’ eyes is enough to win her over. However, this is not what typical flirting is like in the real world. When a guy goes out and talks to a girl, it rarely goes as smooth as seen in movies. Some flirts end with a glass of water in the boy’s face. Others end with a fake phone number given. Many of my femal...

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

By Paxton Cohoon, Contributing Writer Living with roommates is never easy. These roommates can end up being great friends or the bane of existence. Regardless if roommates are great friends, fights are still bound to occur. Common arguments involve what temperature to set the thermostat at, cleaning or lack of cleaning habits, and monopolizing the bathroom. How you approach these arguments is key when dealing with roommates. Here at McKendree University, roommates are to try to resolve their problems amongst themselves. If that does not work, they are to inform their Resident Assistant (RA). If that still does not work, they can also inform the Resident Director (RD). McKenna Scaturro, senior at McKendree, resolves her roommate conflicts by discussing them with her roommates in a friendly...

Behind the Success: Darren Wynn

By Zach Breeding, Co-Editor of Sports Darren Wynn's life is one that is heavily influenced by family and friends. And if it wasn't for his family, he may not have even had the opportunity to achieve the massive success that he has as a wrestler at McKendree. "My biggest inspiration has to go to my family, they always push me. I'm the oldest cousin and brother, so I have to show the younger people in my family how to take care of business," said Wynn, a redshirt junior from Champaign, Ill. This backbone, along with his coaches, is also Wynn's support system. However, it's not just a helping hand that his family provides. They were also his initial push into wrestling. Wrestling has been a part of Wynn's life since the second grade, but this wasn't by his design. Up until his sophomore yea...
