Mckendree’s 2023-2024 Lincoln Laureate: Bradley Eston

By Megan Melone, Writer Photography submitted by Brad Eston According to The Lincoln Academy of Illinois, “Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.” Every year, seniors from every college in Illinois are nominated by their college and are recipients of this prestigious award recognizing their excellence. McKendree’s 2023-2024 recipient is senior Brad Eston. Brad is a music education major from Quincy, Illinois. I interviewed Brad about becoming a Student Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois:   Have you always wanted to do music education? ESTON: I did not, actually. That was a conversation we had at this event. So, I originally...

Get Involved With Your Faith: Praise & Worship at McKendree

By Madison Bonner, Writer Photography by Madison Bonner and Gwendolyn Southerd Though McKendree University's religious affiliation is with the United Methodist Church, the student body contains a variety of religious denominations. McKendree welcomes students of all faiths and encourages them to grow and continue their spiritual journeys. On campus, Bothwell Chapel serves as an excellent resource for students to do just that. This semester, students met in the lower level of the chapel for an event called Come to the Table. Every first and third Thursday of the month, students celebrate their faith in this student-led praise and worship session. Upon arriving at the chapel, students can sit wherever they like and enjoy the service among their peers. Reverend Beverly Wilkes-...

Why Work-Study Might be Right for You

By: Kaitlyn Williams Nearly everyone knows the exceedingly high costs of universities, from thousands of dollars in tuition to hundreds for textbooks, and, for many students, another few thousand in residency and meal plan costs every semester. Most don’t have the luxury of getting a full-ride scholarship or winning the financial lottery of being born to rich parents. So, it’s no surprise that many have to resort to financial aid, particularly student loans, to pay for college. Unfortunately, this often comes at the price of student debt, something students are increasingly becoming all too familiar with. But how does one avoid this? With a majority of higher-paying careers requiring degrees and society’s expectation to attend college, simply “not going” isn’t always an option. One ...

Women’s Volleyball: A Team That Knows How to Make Their Mark

By Elma Oijens Sjoelin, Sports Writer Title photo retrieved from McKendree Volleyball Instagram Fall sports are reaching the end of their respective seasons, so I wanted to put a spotlight on the women’s volleyball team. The team is very busy this time of the year, especially since they travel a lot. I was not sure if any of the players would have time for an interview, considering that they are known around campus to excel in their academics as well. I figured that they do not have much time between studying, practices, and classes, so I was beyond grateful when junior Amber Williams agreed to do an interview and share some of her thoughts on the team, their season, and how she and her teammates managed to balance and come through on the court as well as in the classroom. Willia...

Tricks, Treats, and Tours: Halloween at McKendree

By Madison Bonner, Writer Photography by Madison Bonner On Monday, October 30th, McKendree celebrated Halloween with two events: a Haunted Campus Tour and Trick-or-Treat! Despite the freezing weather, they had great turnouts. Students braved the cold to dress up - and dress warm - for both events. The first event, McKendree’s Haunted Campus Tour, was hosted by McKendree’s History Club. This year marks its second annual occurrence. On this tour, students learned about McKendree’s past and its suspected hauntings. As the oldest college in Illinois, there is an abundance of spooky stories and fun facts to explore!  Isabella and Alexandria led the haunted tour. President Isabella (Bella) Barbaglia led the tour with Alexandria (Alex) Terveer and history professor Dr. Shelly Lemo...

Spooky Sex: Sex Safety and Wellness Fair at McKendree

By: Megan Melone, Writer Photography by Megan Melone and Madison Rohn Linus from the Peanuts comics and a black cat both made an appearance at the fair! On Friday, October 29th, the third annual Spooky Sex fair was held at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. Spooky Sex, hosted by the Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board, offered information and resources on sex, dating, testing, and protection. Tables offered informative games with prizes. Gifts like condoms, ribbons, and first aid kits were given out, and students could enter to win raffle prizes related to sexual health. Since it was close to Halloween, students were encouraged to dress up, and many tables gave out candy. While the event is a fun spin on sexual education, it is important to ha...

McKendree Theatre Puts Hilarious Spin on Classic Tale

By Madison Rohn, Lead Editor Photos by Michelle Magnussen McKendree theatre’s fall play, Cinderella Waltz by Don Nigro, is a comedic and insightful retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale that will take the stage this weekend. The play breaks down the archetypes of the original fairy tale and shows them in a new way with plot twists and humor for adults.  Cinderella Waltz focuses on Rosey Snow as she tries to make sense of her fairy tale world while putting up with her crazy stepmother, stepsisters, and father. All this happens as she encounters a prince, a troll, a possibly homicidal village idiot, and a fairy godmother who sings sailor songs.  Left to right: Mrs. Snow (Marin Jalinsky), Regan (Denaysha Jackson), and Goneril (Madison Rohn) make up Rosey's stepfamily. The cas...

Celebrating Other Cultures Through International Meal Day

By Madison Bonner, Writer Photography by Madison Bonner On Wednesday, October 25th, McKendree celebrated International Meal Day. This event was reintroduced by current SGA President Maria Salomão two years ago and has been a huge success since. On this day, students from all around the world share their culture through their countries' recipes.  This highly anticipated event was organized by Ana Cecilia Carvalho, the International Senator for McKendree’s Student Government Association. Ana sent out an email to all international students, who then filled out the survey with their dish and country. Students from Brazil stir up success with their famous Brigadeiro. This year, 13 international students participated in the event. Six dishes in total were prepared by these studen...

The Wonders of Holman Library

By Isabella Brand, Writer Photography by Isabella Brand As a first-year student at McKendree, I love exploring the campus to see what different locations offer. Holman Library piqued my interest because it has so many resources for students. Students can check out a variety of items (not just books!).  The library offers GoPros, laptops, Chromebooks, calculators, DVDs, Blu-rays, board games, miscellaneous cords, and textbooks. Depending on the type of item checked out, due dates will vary. Make sure to pay attention to when the items are due so you don’t get fined! Taking advantage of textbooks, laptops, and DVDs by borrowing them from the library can save you some money. Calculators are an excellent loan, especially if you are taking a math class. Free books for the public to...
