FreshEats: Students Helping Students Eat Fresh

By Madison Bonner, Writer Title photo: students Mike Milesi and Tomoki Asano present their sushi to-go box for FreshEats. It all started with a Snapchat story… In August of 2023, students began seeing menus posted to the McKendree group Snapchat story. Flyers appeared around campus and at apartments. These advertisements promised several home-cooked meals such as salmon, chicken and rice, and sushi. But what were these menus for? And who started it all? The menus were posted by a food delivery service called FreshEats: a brand new, completely student-run organization. It is managed by two students at McKendree, who work together to cook, advertise, and deliver the food. The idea is to give McKendree students healthy alternatives to processed food, such as fast food or instant ...

Mental Health Matters Fair Returns

By Madison Rohn and Grace Gross, Lead Editors Photos provided by Counseling Services Last Wednesday marked the return of the Mental Health Matters Fair. The fair was presented by the offices of Counseling Services and Residence Life as a way to promote mental health and inform students of the mental health resources available to them. One table provided student-athletes with tips to help their mental health. Tables were set up in the Hett and were run by campus offices, such as Counseling Services, Health Services, and the Student Success Center, along with psychology students and club members, and local counseling groups. Students were given passports to have marked at each station that they could enter to win a raffle. The first table at the fair gave students passport...

Women’s Bowling: New Head Coach Shawn Bibee Returns to Bearcat Country

By: Elma Oijens Sjoelin, sports writer Photos collected from 2023-24 Women's Bowling Roster (https://mckbearcats.com/sports/womens-bowling/roster) As the fall semester has kicked off, several athletic programs at McKendree are mobilizing toward successful pre- and regular seasons. A new school year also presents new beginnings, opportunities, and changes. For one program, such changes include a new coaching staff. Last year, the women’s bowling program placed 4th in the NCAA Championships and earned the ITC Championship Title concluding the 2022-23 season earlier this year. The program has a history of winning, and the players are known to excel inside the classroom and on the lanes, earning both athletic and academic titles and awards. They now face new challenges and opportun...

Spirit of Mckendree Plays Quad Tunes

By Megan Melone, writer Photography by Grace Gross and Jonathan Zarr If you passed by the library on September 19, at about 2:45 p.m., you probably heard the Spirit of McKendree blasting “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire. The band serenaded campus with a surprise pop-up performance behind the bearcat statue on Tuesday afternoon. Along with “September,” the band’s set list included “Take on Me” by a-ha, “Back in Black” by AC/DC, and many more. The band ended their performance with the McKendree fight song, which they also played later that day at the town hall meeting in the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. The Spirit of McKendree ensemble performs at tailgate events and football games. They play a variety of student-selected music and feature student conductors. I interviewed...

Monday Meals at the Joseph House

By: Elizabeth Bocock, writer Photography: Elizabeth Bocock As someone raised in a family that does not follow a religion, when I first started at McKendree, I was a little apprehensive about a flier I received in my school email inviting me to Saint Joseph for dinner after the first day of school. But with the promise of “MCKENDREE STUDENTS ALL ARE WELCOME” and precisely zero friends, I thought I would take my chances. I was relieved to find that when Joseph House wrote “all are welcome” on their flier, they really meant it. Even though it was hosted by and within a church, the only mention of religion was when they asked my denomination when I signed in at the door. The entire event was purely about meeting people and having dinner together. They only do dinner on Monday nights,...

Bearcat at Barbenheimer

By: Madison Rohn, Editor Cover Image received from syfy.com This summer, I participated in the historical event that will go on to define 2023: Barbenheimer! Following the trends, I went with my friends and siblings to see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer back-to-back on the same day. Both movies were different from my go-to genres of science fiction and fantasy (The Lord of the Rings movies are my favorite), so I was excited to try something new.  We started at ten in the morning and went on the day after the movies premiered, so the theater was crowded and the busiest I had seen since COVID-19. I loved seeing all the people who were dressed up, especially all the pink or sparkly Barbie-inspired outfits. Since we were going to be at the theater for fi...
