McKendree Rotaract Club

With the plethora of clubs that are present on campus, there is no shortage of organizations for students to join. One club that is often overlooked is McKendree’s Rotaract Club. This type of club isn’t reserved for McKendree, or even universities in general, but is an international organization. There are community-led Rotary organizations around the globe that are welcome to all members. In fact, it is quite common for community-led branches of Rotary to sponsor and partner with their local university’s club. For example, McKendree’s club is a partner with the Rotary Club of O’Fallon Sunrise. Rotaract Club does a lot of good for the community that often goes unnoticed and underappreciated. One example is that last year while the war on Ukraine was first raging the country, McKendree’...

The History of McKendree University

By: Kristina Ferry & Jasmine Gage Images retrieved from the McKendree University website McKendree University is one of the oldest universities in the nation and the oldest university in Illinois as it was founded in 1828. McKendree also holds the title of being the oldest university in the nation to have ties with the Methodist Church. However, this would not come as a big surprise to anyone who knows the past of this historic university. To those who are unaware, the university was founded by Methodist pioneers and was originally called Lebanon Seminary. This seminary trained priests and ministers in the Methodist faith for a couple of years under Edward Raymond Ames, a Methodist bishop and the namesake of the dining hall on campus. Later, a bishop by the name of William M...

Months on End: A Wonderful Play Put on by Our Peers

By: Kristina Ferry Photography by Michelle Magnussen Over the weekend, a group of our peers here at McKendree put on a wonderful play that they had been practicing for months. This play was called Months on End, and it was written by Craig Pospisil in 2002. This play covered the lives of eight young individuals over the course of a year and the struggles they face within their relationships, both familial and romantic. Some of the key relationships that the audience watched roll out were: Phoebe and Ben, two fiancees who have some lingering doubt about whether marriage is right for them, and Elaine and Walter, a couple unsure of what their future actions should be as Walter is currently divorcing his wife.  Walter (played by Hunter Tucker) and Elaine (played by Jayden Touchet...

McKendree’s International Students’ Views on the Upcoming Midterm Elections

By: Marissa Barauskas, Cale Koester & Kevin Schuele  Image retrieved from NBC News American Politics and the issues that arise in our country not only involve our nation, but other countries around the world. At McKendree University, many students come from many different countries and backgrounds and view different issues in different lights. Even though international students cannot vote in elections, their voices and opinions on the issues that our nation faces are important and can affect their home countries as well. We interviewed a few of McKendree’s international students to gather some insight into how they feel about the upcoming elections.  The first person we interviewed was Riko Nakanishi from Hiroshima, Japan. We asked her a few questions about how she...

Phi Beta Lambda Makes a Comeback at McKendree

By Emily Stanowski, Staff Writer Much like The McKendree Review, McKendree University's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is becoming more active. PBL has been around for many years at McKendree, but wants to become more involved on and off campus this semester. Last semester, the group hosted a successful 5K, and is holding a trivia night in April to raise funds for members. This past month, the group attended the Winter Seminar Series at SWIC. The Series is held to prepare Southern Illinois’ PBL chapters for success at the State Leadership Conference on April 7-8. The conference gives students a chance to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. Students also have the opportunity to network with important business leaders and fellow students. The conference consists of a se...

Parking needed on campus!

BY EMILY CONSEVAGE Contributing Writer Parking at McKendree University has been an issue among students and faculty for the past few years. Though the university has not made any drastic changes to resolve this problem, President Dennis and administration are well aware of this issue. There are currently eight parking lots for students, not including Stanton Street. The faculty members have four parking lots that are off-limits to students during the week. However, faculty can essentially park anywhere they want. Additionally, many McKendree students and faculty have noticed that the city of Lebanon has taken away many of the parking spots on campus. Merrill Street was another parking option for the McKendree community, but now the city of Lebanon has established “No Parking” signs, for t...
