Women’s Bowling: Defending the National Title

By: Elma Oijens Sjoelin Photos provided by Anna Warkel By far one of the most successful athletic programs at McKendree University is the women’s bowling team. Last year, they won the NCAA bowling championship, and with a winning history behind them, the women’s bowling team is now aiming to defend their national title. A history of winning comes with high expectations and a lot of pressure, and when you are number one, others are hungry to knock you off the podium. In fact, on February 10th, the NTCA (National Tenpin Coaches Association) ranked the McKendree women’s bowling program as number one in the nation on their National Coaches Poll.  Although the bowling team is busy managing academics and bowling this time of the year, Anna Warkel, a second-year student who com...

McKendree Psychology Club

By: Grace Gross, Editor in Chief Photography: taken and provided by Grace Gross Senior Breanna Sampo is the President of the Psychology Club. Breanna’s favorite part about Psychology Club is the connections she builds with her psychology peers and the opportunity to be herself.  When talking about what it is like being President of the Psychology Club, Breanna said she enjoys “being able to work alongside Dr. Hahn and brainstorm fun and creative ways to get students involved and engaged beyond the classroom.” Charlee Taylor, Secretary of the Psychology Club, shared similar thoughts: “I enjoy getting to learn more about psychology in a fun way and ways that interest me. Like through socials, movies, and game nights.” I, Grace, am the Social Media Manager for Psychology ...

Off-Season with McKendree Women’s Soccer

By: Elma Oijens Sjoelin Photography: Provided by Elma Oijens Sjoelin As we are slowly approaching the middle of the spring semester, many winter and spring sports at McKendree are currently finishing or just starting their competitive seasons. We see and hear a lot about how it is going for our classmates who are representing McKendree when competing, but have you ever wondered what some of the fall sports are up to during the spring?  One of the sports teams at McKendree currently in their off-season is the women’s soccer team. Last year, the women’s soccer team went undefeated in the Conference games for the first time ever in the history of the program. After the regular season, they claimed a spot in the national tournament and made it to the first round. They were then ...

Catalyst: We Want You!

By: The McKendree University Catalyst Members Photos provided by Dr. Mueller The editors of McKendree University’s literary and art magazine, Catalyst, are on the hunt for submissions from undergraduates. Catalyst is a student-run magazine that strives to give McKendree students a chance to express themselves artistically. Every spring, the editors of the magazine work to accept, compile, edit, and publish the best poetry, art, fiction and essays created by McKendree students attending the Lebanon campus. “Catalyst has given me the opportunity to publish my creative writing and poetry. It’s one of the only creative outlets on campus, and I think students should take full advantage of the opportunity to share their work,” Catalyst editor and contributing author Alivia Garcia said....

The History of McKendree University

By: Kristina Ferry & Jasmine Gage Images retrieved from the McKendree University website McKendree University is one of the oldest universities in the nation and the oldest university in Illinois as it was founded in 1828. McKendree also holds the title of being the oldest university in the nation to have ties with the Methodist Church. However, this would not come as a big surprise to anyone who knows the past of this historic university. To those who are unaware, the university was founded by Methodist pioneers and was originally called Lebanon Seminary. This seminary trained priests and ministers in the Methodist faith for a couple of years under Edward Raymond Ames, a Methodist bishop and the namesake of the dining hall on campus. Later, a bishop by the name of William M...

Still Need a Halloween Costume?

by Sophie Jeffery, Contributing Writer Are you a procrastinator and/or a cheapskate?  Need a costume for a last-minute party invite?  You’ve come to the right place, my friend!  I took a trip to the Dollar General in town today and found pieces for lots of super easy costumes that will surely be a big hit.  Most costumes can be put together for less than $10 and require little to no effort, I promise. First up, it’s everyone’s favorite culinary genius turned meme, Salt Bae.  This costume could not be any easier, and if you have a white scoop neck t-shirt, will cost you only $8.55.  Slick your hair back into a low pony, grab a fake mustache/soul patch if you want, and you are good to go. Here is another costume that literally could not get any easier (especially for the ladies because...

McKendree’s Most Interesting Man

By Zach Manion, Contributing Writer Lebanon, Ill. - On the surface, Christopher DiOrio seems no different the regular adjunct professor at McKendree University. Most faculty and students know him solely for his teaching. What most don’t know about DiOrio is his life before McKendree; a life full of simplicity and adventure. DiOrio was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. and spent his adolescent years there. After graduating from Dickinson College in 1992, he moved to Washington D.C. From there, he went on to move eight more times, not including short moves back to Pittsburgh, before finally landing in St. Louis in 2013. “I was moving once a year. I would call my parents every so often and say I was moving and they would ask if I was in trouble or trying to evade the police,” DiOrio said.” In his yea...

A Boy and His Cows

By JT Russell, Contributing Writer Lebanon, Ill. - As the birds begin to chirp and the grass once again turns a vibrant green, college students can’t help but envision the imminent summer break.  For most college kids, summer break means sleeping in until ten o’clock, road trips with your friends and consuming a few too many adult beverages in an activity that the music group Little Big Town characterizes as 'Day Drinking.' However, for 20-year-old Bradley Robert Wyss II, summer days consist of 5 A.M. alarms, immense amounts of Colombian dark roast coffee, Waylon Jennings radio on Pandora and a fair amount of cow excrement coating his Ariat work boots. Brad, a Junior at McKendree, is currently studying marketing. In addition to his studies, he is a defensive end on the football team and ...

Think About Your Pink

BY GRACE McDOWELL Staff Writer One in eight women will develop breast cancer in the course of her lifetime. Using those statistics, of the roughly 1,411 female students currently enrolled at McKendree, approximately 176 will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives, roughly 12.5% of the student population. These alarming statistics reveal why breast cancer awareness is important. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and you may have noticed more of the color pink. McKendree athletic teams, NFL teams and even the White House are all sporting their pink. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 with the sole purpose of promoting mammograms for early detection of breast cancer. Women 40 years and over are encouraged to get a yearly mammogram. As college students,...
