McKendree’s Record-Setting Career Fair

Photos retrieved from the McKendree University Instagram This past Wednesday, McKendree’s annual career fair was held in the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. A record number of 76 different employers and graduate schools were registered for this year’s fair. Tables of organizations such as nonprofits, businesses, police departments, graduate schools and government agencies lined the Hett lobby and wrapped around the stage. Many of these organizations were looking to hire part-time or full-time employees or had internships to offer. The fair also gave students an opportunity to practice networking, even if they were not looking for a job or internship at the moment. McKendree’s Marketing and Communications department was at the fair to take professional headshots for students to use...

Wrestling in the Hett: A Historic Event

Written by and photos taken by Elma Oijens Sjoelin On February 7th, 2023, something historical happened on the campus of McKendree University. For the first time in history, a sporting event was held in the Russel E. & Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, commonly known as “The Hett.” The Hett has always had a busy schedule of hosting art events, plays, shows, and fairs, but never before had a sporting event been held in the spacious state-of-the-art facility.  The McKendree men’s wrestling team had the honor of hosting and winning a duel against Davenport University on the Hett stage. The wrestlers added another win to their record with a final score of 55 points to McKendree and -1 to Davenport. McKendree totaled five pins and two technical falls in their win against...

McKendree Rotaract Club

With the plethora of clubs that are present on campus, there is no shortage of organizations for students to join. One club that is often overlooked is McKendree’s Rotaract Club. This type of club isn’t reserved for McKendree, or even universities in general, but is an international organization. There are community-led Rotary organizations around the globe that are welcome to all members. In fact, it is quite common for community-led branches of Rotary to sponsor and partner with their local university’s club. For example, McKendree’s club is a partner with the Rotary Club of O’Fallon Sunrise. Rotaract Club does a lot of good for the community that often goes unnoticed and underappreciated. One example is that last year while the war on Ukraine was first raging the country, McKendree’...

The History of McKendree University

By: Kristina Ferry & Jasmine Gage Images retrieved from the McKendree University website McKendree University is one of the oldest universities in the nation and the oldest university in Illinois as it was founded in 1828. McKendree also holds the title of being the oldest university in the nation to have ties with the Methodist Church. However, this would not come as a big surprise to anyone who knows the past of this historic university. To those who are unaware, the university was founded by Methodist pioneers and was originally called Lebanon Seminary. This seminary trained priests and ministers in the Methodist faith for a couple of years under Edward Raymond Ames, a Methodist bishop and the namesake of the dining hall on campus. Later, a bishop by the name of William M...

Dear Bogey: Struggling Younger Sister

Dear Bogey, Families can be hard to deal with sometimes, and I am having a hard time connecting with my older sister recently. We used to be very close when we both lived at home, but ever since I moved away for college, it has been hard to stay close. I don’t want to lose the relationship that I have with my sister, but she is making it hard for me to want to keep our relationship. She is my older sister, so she thinks that she has to be a mother to me when that isn’t what I want at all. I just want to have a sister that I don’t feel like I have to hide stuff from. The last time we hung out we had the biggest fight that we have ever had, and things haven’t been the same as before. She got mad at me because I didn’t tell her that I was going somewhere, and as her younger sister, she t...

Dear Bogey: Loyal Worker

Dear Bogey, I am a recent college graduate who just started my dream job a little less than three months ago. I absolutely love working for this company and have made some great friends along the way. My manager has been asking me to help her steal money for a couple of weeks now. I know that it is wrong of me to help her, but I don’t want to lose my job by refusing to help her steal money for her personal benefit. Bogey, should I turn in my manager to a higher-up official in the company or just continue to do what she is asking me to do, in hopes that she eventually stops asking me to assist her with these actions?  Sincerely, Loyal Worker Dear Loyal Worker,  Thank you for coming to me for advice on this very sensitive topic. While this may feel like a tough situat...

Counseling Services

By: Tayla Johnson Photography by Tayla Johnson Mental health is very important for college students and should be a factor that everyone should consider. Counseling services provide the most adequate aid for McKendree’s students and faculty, which requires no fees or charges to those who attend the institution. The assistant director of health and counseling services, Melissa McHenry, and Charles Gregory, who is the university counselor at McKendree, educate students and faculty in creating better mental health and well-being for themselves. For students, it can be difficult to adjust to the differences that come with a new start that college brings. “We do everything we can to help students with their transition through school,” says Gregory. Also, there are many stresses that c...

Dear Bogey: Illinois Miss Independent

Dear Bogey, My boyfriend and I have been together for two years and we both decided to come to Mckendree as we both live within an hour of the school. We are both freshmen this year. Since we got to school my boyfriend has been very clingy to me, which in the past I have never minded, but now I want to do some things on my own. He is with me nearly nonstop. I am struggling to make friends because of it and I always want to go do things on my own now. I want to be able to grow at college and make a lot of new friends because all of my friends from home went to a different school. Our relationship is really strong and I do not want to lose him but I also want to be independent sometimes and have time for myself. I love him but I am learning that independence can happen when in a relation...
